Building capabilities within our own organization and our suppliers' is important for sustainable improvements
Sourcing personnel
Raising awareness and competencies within our own sourcing organization is an important aspect of supplier network management. In 1999 we started environmental training for our purchasing and sourcing personnel and then in February 2002 we began providing training on labor conditions issues.
The content of the training focuses on the concept of corporate responsibility (CR), stakeholder expectations regarding Nokia's supply chain management, the Nokia Code of Conduct, our Environmental Policy, environmental and social requirements for suppliers, ISO14001 and SA8000 content, practical information on assessing environmental and social impact, and internal ethical practices (e.g. gift policy).
In addition, the lead assessors of in-depth labor conditions and environmental assessments have external SA8000 and ISO14001 auditor training.
Suppliers
We expect our suppliers to meet the Nokia Supplier Requirements through their own efforts but we can and do provide support if requested. From a CR perspective, most of our training focuses either on our expectations and the management of labor conditions or Design for Environment practices.
It is becoming increasingly apparent that training and capacity building amongst companies in the supply chain are important for driving sustainable improvements from a social and environmental perspective. Therefore as part of the GeSI SCWG we are also currently investigating other potential projects.
