Boosting Interoperability
Interoperability is a critical succes factor in ensuring continuous growth of service usage. Nokia is working on interoperability in many fronts.
Open Mobile Alliance Interoperability Process
The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Interoperability Programme consists of defining Enabler Test Specifications, carrying out Interoperability test fests, and hosting a Trusted Zone service for facilitating these for the OMA member companies.
To date, Nokia has tested dozens of implementations of OMA specifications for MMS, IMPS, DRM, Download, Device Management, PoC, XDM, Presence, DRM and SUPL, and Data Synchronization in the OMA test fests.
Bilateral Testing
In the interest of providing the market with interoperable products, Nokia conducts also bilateral interoperability testing with other wireless vendors.
Bilateral testings are done case-by-case, evaluating market and product needs. To cover a large market segment, the tests are carried out with major vendors. The bilateral interoperability test results are presented in reports that, by agreement among the test partners, can be shared with customers
Interoperability Service for S60 Licensees
Nokia tests each version of S60 software for interoperability functionality in the platform and core application level before licensing it out to others. To reduce the S60 Software licensee's need to invest in an expensive interoperability-testing environment, Nokia also offers them a possibility for interoperability verification service. Each verification session is tailored for the specific customer product and will be done using the environment Nokia has already built (radio network elements for different regions, a WAP gateway, multimedia messaging center, mobile terminals, analyzers, laptop computers, Bluetooth devices, and more).
The outcome of the interoperability verification service is a detailed report and analysis. These results are valuable for the customer, providing information that helps to ensure the highest product quality.
Technology Licensing
Nokia has a history of being a cradle of novelty technologies in the mobile communications industry. This innovation power continues to have a strong influence in how people live and work as some of the most prominent Nokia-originated technologies are licensed by other players in the converging ICT industry. A base for interoperability service offering can form around there innovations, as e.g. S60 software platform has proven.
