Installation

Installing the modem .inf files for the Nokia 6800 and Nokia Modem Options

The modem .inf files for the Nokia 6800 are installed automatically during PC Suite installation. During installation, you must select whether you want to install the modem as a cable connection, an infrared connection or both. If you want to use a cable connection, you must then connect your phone to your PC using the connectivity cable, DKU-5 and allow your PC to detect the port where the phone is connected.

The Nokia Modem Options are installed automatically during the PC Suite installation, unless you unselect the Nokia Modem Options when you select which features you want to install with the PC Suite.

If you want to install the Nokia Modem Options after you have installed the PC Suite, double click the file 6800_PC Suite_515.exe and on the Welcome screen, click Modify. On the Select Features screen, make sure that the Nokia Modem Options box is checked. You can also modify the installation by going to Control panel>Add/remove programs>Nokia PC Suite 5.1 then click the Add/remove button.

Warning:
Do not uncheck the boxes for the applications that you have already installed. If you uncheck the boxes while modifying the installation, all applications with an unchecked box will be uninstalled.

Downloading and installing infrared modem .inf files

You can also download and install the modem .inf files separately. You can download the modem .inf files from www.nokia.com/support/phones/6800. There are separate files for each connection method. Note: If you do not want to use AT commands, you must have Nokia Modem Options installed, before you can use your phone as a modem.

To install the modem .inf files:

It is recommended that you first copy the .inf files to the folder Windows\inf (the exact folder name depends on the OS) to ensure that the OS finds these files.

  1. Connect your phone to your PC. Your PC should recognize the connection and install your phone as a standard modem.
  2. Go to the Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Hardware tab).
  3. In the list under modems, you should see the Standard modem over…. Select this, right click with your mouse and select Properties.
  4. Go to the Driver tab of the Properties dialog and select Update driver.
  5. A hardware wizard opens. Click Next and then select Search for a suitable driver.
  6. Select Specify location and then Browse for the location where you stored the .inf file

Click OK and then next. Click Yes or OK on the digital signature window and then select Finish. Your driver is now updated and device manager should show Nokia 6800 in the list under modem.

You may need to…

…make sure you have the correct cable drivers already installed on your PC before your PC can detect your phone. For information on this, please see the CD-ROM that came with your cable.
…update the driver manually if you are using Windows XP and WinXP has automatically installed the standard IR modem first. To update the driver, you have to have an IR connection between your phone and PC. To do this, follow the instructions under To install infrared Modem inf files.
