- Phonebook:
Up to 500 names with 3 numbers and 1 text item can be stored.
A maximum of 5 numbers and 4 text items can be stored per name,
but this leaves room for fewer name entries. Similarly, more names
can be stored if not all
of the numbers and/or text items are used (dynamic memory).
- SMS: Up to 150 messages of text only or up to
50 picture messages or a combination of those (dynamic memory).
- Calendar notes: Between 100 and 500 calendar notes
(dynamic memory).
- To-do list: Up to 30 notes.
Q: What does dynamic memory mean?
A: Dynamic memory means that the
number of total entries depends on the amount of content/information
for each entry. In other words, the more content you have per entry,
the fewer entries you can have (e.g. several numbers under one name
in the phonebook means fewer phonebook entries in total).
Q: I keyed in an alarm time in the Countdown timer and switched
the mobile phone off. The alarm never went off. Why?
A: Your phone must be switched on to use the Countdown
timer. If the alarm time is reached when the phone is in standby
mode, the phone sounds a tone and flashes the note text if it is
set or else Countdown time up.
Q: I tried to send a business card via Infrared to a friend’s
phone. We didn’t succeed in this. What might have been the problem?
A: The distance between the two phones might have been
to long. The preferable distance between the two devices in an Infrared
connection is one meter at most. The time period between activating
the IR port and starting the transfer might have been to long. If
data transfer is not started within two minutes after the activation
of the IR port, the connection is cancelled and has to be started
again. Ensure that the IR ports of the sending and receiving devices
are pointing at each other and that there are no obstructions between
the devices.
Integrated FM radio
Q: How does the integrated FM radio work?
A: The radio in the
Nokia 8310 works very much like a normal radio. You can manually
switch between channels or use the search option and program your
favourite channels under the number key places (as quick-dial saving
from the phonebook)
Q: How many radio stations can be saved?
A: Twenty (20) radio station frequencies can be saved under
the number keys on the keypad, and nine of these can be accessed
by using the short cut.
Q: The Radio works usually perfectly and the sound quality
is good. But sometimes the radio seems to take interference from
something?
A: When an application using a GPRS or HSCSD connection
is sending or receiving data, it may interfere with the radio. The
quality of the radio broadcast depends on the radio station’s coverage
in that particular area.
Q: I set the frequency of my favourite radio channel
and saved it. However, it seems that I didn’t remember the exact
frequency. What can I do?
A: When the radio is on, select Options and Manual Tuning.
Press either of the scroll keys briefly to move the channel search
0.1 MHz upwards or downwards or press and hold down for searching
the channel fast upwards or downwards. To save the found channel,
press OK to save the channel.
Voice Features
Q: How do the voice commands work? How many commands
are there?
A: You can activate certain phone features with your pre-set
voice command tags. With voice commands you can activate Profiles,
listen to Voice Messages, turn the radio on or off, change the radio
station, activate IR, and activate the Voice Recorder. To manage
the voice commands you can also use the headset.
Q: How does the voice recording feature work?
A: With the voice recorder you can save phone conversations
and record your own voice memos.
Q: I recorded voice tags for some numbers I use most. When trying
to use the voice dialing function, it doesn’t work. What did I do
wrong?
A: Voice tags are sensitive to background noise. Record
them and make calls in a quiet environment. You must say the name
exactly as you said it when you recorded it. When recording a voice
tag or making a call by saying a voice tag, hold the phone in the
normal position near to your ear. This may be difficult in, for
example, a noisy environment or during an emergency, so you should
not rely solely upon voice dialling in all circumstances. Very short
names are not accepted. Use long names and avoid similar names for
different numbers. When an application using the GPRS connection
is sending or receiving data, you cannot make a call by using voice
dialling. To make a call by using a voice tag, end the application
using the GPRS connection.
Q: Can I record music from the radio with voice recorder?
A: No, that is not possible.

Technologies
Q: How many WAP connection sets can be stored
in the Nokia 8310?
A: The Nokia 8310 supports 5 different WAP connection
sets. Please note that you can also utilise Nokia WAP Manager in
the PC Suite to edit the connection sets with your compatible PC
(see below).
Q: Why have 5 different connection sets?
A: A connection set defines a WAP gateway. Without
the settings, it is impossible to access any gateway i.e. access
web based content suited for WAP devices. One of the reasons for
having different gateways is to give you the option of having several
access points. (It is like having different modem numbers available
to call for your Internet connection.)
Q: How many bookmarks can be stored in
the Nokia 8310?
A: You can store up to 25 bookmarks of your favourite WAP
pages.
Q: Does the Nokia 8310 have SIM ATK support?
A: Yes, the Nokia 8310 supports SIM ATK Class 2 excluding
call control.
Q: Does the Nokia 8310 support HSCSD?
A: The Nokia 8310 supports High Speed Circuit
Switched Data, which is a natural evolution fulfilling
the increasing need for data communications (as opposed to only
voice telephony).
The Nokia 8310 has a built-in modem for high-speed data transfer
via IrDA connectivity from 9.6 kbps up to 43.2 kbps. The maximum
number of simultaneously used time slots is either 3+1 or 2+2 (receiving/sending.
This provides almost the same Internet surfing experience via mobile
access as with a fixed network.
You can download the Nokia Modem Setup for Nokia 8310 from the Nokia
web site. It will control transmission and transceiving speeds.
The Nokia Modem Setup for the Nokia 8310 has modem drivers for Win95,
Win98, Windows ME and Win2000 operating systems. The Nokia 8310
built-in modem responds to standard AT commands.

When using HSCSD, the only thing the user has to activate on the
phone is the IrDA function. Please note that your network must support
HSCSD service and you must subscribe to the service.
Q: What applications come with the new
Nokia PC Suite?
A:

Q: Where and how can I get this new PC Suite?
A: You can download it for free from Nokia web pages at www.forum.nokia.com
Q: If I have an older version of the Nokia
PC Suite in my computer (e.g. from the Nokia 8210), what do I need
to do?
A: You don't have to do anything. The new PC Suite is installed
and the older PC Suite will either remain or be updated. In the
case of Data Suite 3.0, the Data Suite will ask to be updated to
Data Suite 3.0a. The update can be downloaded free of charge from
Nokia's web site. These two applications (Data Suite 3.0 and PC
Suite 4.3) use the same components and that is why the Data Suite
3.0 update is needed.
Q: What does GPRS mean?
A: As addition to GSM network, GPRS will enable you to
have continuous mobile access to operator services and the Internet.
The main initial use for GPRS is to have it as a bearer for Wireless
Application Protocol (WAP) services. GPRS enabled mobiles can use
radio resources in GSM networks when there is data to be sent or
received, and so is well adapted to bursty nature of data applications.
Furthermore, it provides immediate connectivity and higher throughput
than previous WAP enabled mobiles (depending on network). It is
also possible to use messaging Short Message Service (SMS) and laptop
connectivity to Internet with GPRS. WAP over GPRS brings cost savings
to both mobile operators and consumers, because GPRS radio resources
are only needed while transferring the message. At its best, GPRS
is transparent, allowing you to concentrate on the task in hand
rather than on the technology.
Q: What are the benefits of GPRS?
A: GPRS brings IP to GSM networks, improving spectrum
efficiency and end-user experience e.g. allowing higher data transmission
speeds and lower costs.
Q: How do I use GPRS?
A: The Nokia 8310 supports General Packet Radio Service,
which is a new data bearer like the old GSM Data (CSD
) or today's HSCSD. The end user gets the benefits of GPRS through
WAP or PC connectivity (or even SMS) usage when GPRS is used as
a data bearer for these applications.
Please note that your network must support GPRS service and that
you need to subscribe to the service.
Q: How GPRS connection is secured?
A: Authentication and ciphering are used in radio access.
IP security is operator dependent and there is various, standard
Internet security methods available.
Q: What happens if
my mother calls me when Im using GPRS connection to browse
WAP pages?
A: The GPRS connection is suspended temporarily,
when the network notifies you of the incoming call and if you accept
the call (see indicators in the Main
features of this module). The connection will resume
once you reject or finish the call.
Q: What differencies are there between WAP 1.1
and WAP 1.2.1?
A: New features in WAP 1.2.1 include:
Push service message indication:
small text and a link sent from the server to the phone to inform
about new e-mail, latest WAP games, shopping tips, etc.
Direct call (WTAI "Wireless Telephony Application Interface" Public
library):
interaction from WAP browser to the phone - make a phone call directly
from the WAP site
Predictive text input in WAP Cookies: WAP site setting identifications
for the phone and the web site
Q: If I set my phone Always online
(in WAP settings), what does it mean?
A: It means that GPRS connection is automatically established
when you turn the phone on (if available in the network). If you
select 'When needed', the GPRS connection is established when you
connect to a WAP service, and closed when you exit a WAP browser.
Q: What is the maximum data speed that
can be reached with the Nokia 8310 using GPRS?
A: Presently the data speed supported is up to 40.2 kbps. However,
the actual data speeds always depend on the network capacity and
number of users. The Nokia 8310 uses 3+1 or 2+2 (receiving/sending)
slots.
Q: I was using the data communication applications
on my PC via Inrared, when I received a phone call. After the phone
call I had to set up the connection again. Why?
A: Making or answering phone calls during a PC connection
is not recommended as it might disrupt the operation. For better
performance during data calls, place the phone on a stationary surface
with the keypad facing downward. Do not move the phone by holding
it in your hand during a data call.
Accessories
Q: What is the difference between Headset HDC-5 and
Dual Headset HDD-1?
A: The Dual Headset
is included in the Nokia 8310 sales package and is optimised for
the integrated FM radio usageThe chrome coated details in the earpieces
and the silverfish coloured clip also complement the design of the
Nokia 8310. When used with many of the previous models, such as
the Nokia 8850, 8210, 8250, 3210, 3310 and the Nokia 3330, the new
Dual Headset works as a normal headset. You can listen to the Nokia
8310 radio also with the HDC-5 Headset, but it is not optimal for
listening to the radio because it has only a single earpiece. All
the functionality of the HDC-5 is also found in the HDD-1 headset.
Q: What can I do with the Dual Headset?
A: You can listen to the FM radio - also when GPRS service
is active (muted when you have an incoming call), while playing
a game, browsing phone functions like writing text messages, etc.
You can also browse between the channels you have saved and speak
on phone, give voice commands and voice dial, as with the HDC-5
Headset.
Q: Can all Nokia 8200 and 8800 series accessories be
used with the Nokia 8310?
A: Not all of them, but the battery, chargers, headsets,
the Plug-in HF Car Kit with microphone HFM-8, are compatible between
the Nokia 8200 and 8800 series phones. The accessories specific
to the Nokia 8310 are the colour covers, the DCD-1 Desktop Stand,
the MBD-10 Mobile Holder, and the carrying cases.
Q: Is the Nokia Music Player compatible with the Nokia 8310?
A: Yes
