There is a blinking envelope icon on the display of my Nokia device. Why? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

The blinking closed envelope icon indicates the SIM card message memory is full.

Select Menu > Messaging > Options > (View folders > Options) > SIM messages and delete one or more SMS messages.

Note 1: Class 2 messages (for example, service messages from operators) are stored in the SIM card message memory. Once the SIM card message memory is full, Class 2 messages can't be received.

Note 2: You have used a Nokia S40 product before. In S40 products the SIM card message memory is filled before the device message memory. If you insert a SIM card with full message memory to another device, a blinking message icon appears on the display of your Nokia device.

Note 3: Other reason could be that there is not enough free memory available on the device to store the new message. To release a space go to Messaging > Inbox and remove unnecessary messages

My Nokia phone displays "SIM card rejected" or "SIM card unaccepted". What can I do? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

These kind of messages are displayed in the following situations:

  • The SIM card may be out of alignment. If the phone has recently been dropped, bumped, or opened, the SIM card may need adjusting. Follow the SIM card installation instructions in your phone user guide.
  • The PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) code is entered incorrectly multiple times. This can inactivate the SIM card. If inactivation appears to be permanent, contact your operator or service provider for a new SIM card.
  • You have recently changed your mobile operator or mobile service provider. In this case, either your SIM card or your phone settings may have been configured for your previous operator and therefore reconfiguring is needed.
  • It may also be that your phone is simlocked, so using a SIM card from a different operator or service provider is prohibited. Please contact your current mobile operator or service provider for further assistance.

If none of the situations above apply and you continue to receive this error message, your SIM card may be damaged. Please contact your mobile operator or service provider. Or alternately, contact your local Nokia Care Point for inspection.

Why does my Nokia Lumia's screen turn black when in a call? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

The screen gets turned off during a phone call when the proximity sensor is covered. This is done to avoid accidental touch screen actions when you are in a call.

If the screen gets turned off immediately when dialing a number or receiving a call, check that the proximity sensor area at the upper front of the screen is not covered by any kind of protective film or tape.

You can take the following steps to check the issue. If the screen keeps turned off, the protector may not be of the right size and will block the sensor on the upper part of the front side. Then either remove the protector or cut off the plastic from the blocking area.

  1. Make or receive a call with the phone.
  2. Once the phone is in a call place your hand 1cm above the screen and display will turn off.
  3. Remove your hand and display shall turn back on.
  4. Repeat the test steps 1,2,3 for 3 times to verify the proximity sensor function.

Why doesn't the touch screen respond when I tap it in my Nokia N97, N97 mini or C6-00 phone? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

If there is no response when tapping the touch screen, check the following:

  1. Check that the device is not locked. When the device is locked, you must use the lock switch to unlock and wake up the screen.
  2. If the device is not locked but only the display light time-out has expired and the display has dimmed (a situation which may occur if Keypad autolock feature has been disabled), the touch screen can be woken up by pressing any mechanical keys like menu key, volume keys, camera key or the lock key (lock key needs to be pressed twice because the first press of the key will lock the device).
  3. If in a phone call, check that the proximity detector at the upper front corner of the device is not covered. The proximity sensor will lock the touch screen to avoid unintended touch screen actions during a phone call when placing the device next to your ear. Check that the proximity detector is not covered if trying to use the touch screen while a phone call is active.
  4. Remove the battery and reboot the phone.
  5. If there is a memory card in the phone, try booting up without the memory card.
  6. If your phone supports touch screen calibration, try to re-calibrate the touch screen (select Settings > Phone > Touch input > Touch screen calibration).

If the touch screen doesn't yet respond, try restoring the factory settings. If you cannot access the factory settings menu via the touch screen (Settings > Phone > Phone mgmt. > Factory settings), try entering the following reset commands via the keyboard. Before resetting the device, take a backup of your phone via Nokia Suite.

  • *#7780# (try this first, it will do a soft reset).
  • *#7370# (try this if the above command doesn't help, this command will do a hard reset).

If the touch screen is not yet working properly, take the phone to Nokia care point for inspection.

How can I prolong my battery life on my Nokia phone? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

Use the following guidelines to increase your battery life time:

  • Turn Bluetooth off when you do not need it.
  • Specify that your Nokia phone does not scan, or scans less often, for available Wireless LAN (WLAN) networks in the backround when you do not need WLAN connections (to turn off scanning, disable Show WLAN availability in Wireless LAN settings).
  • If you have set Packet data connection to When available in connection settings, and there is no packet data coverage (GPRS), your Nokia phone periodically tries to establish a packet data connection. To prolong the operating time of your Nokia phone, select Packet data connection > When needed.
  • The Maps application downloads new map information when you scroll to new areas on the map, which increases the demand on battery power. Prevent the automatic download of new maps.
  • If the signal strength of the cellular network varies much in your area, your Nokia phone must scan for the available network repeatedly. This increases the demand on battery power.  If the Network mode is set to dual mode in the network settings, the Nokia phone searches for the UMTS network. To use only the GSM network, select Network mode > GSM
  • The backlight of the display increases the demand on battery power. In the display settings, you can change the time-out after which the backlight is switched off, and adjust the light sensor that observes lighting conditions and adjusts the display brightness.
  • Leaving applications running in the background increases the demand on battery power. Close the applications you are not using.
  • Turn off vibrate function of your Nokia phone, using just the ring tone.
  • Avoid using moving or animated pictures or videos for your Nokia phone's background.
  • Turn off your Nokia phone whenever you do not plan to answer any calls, for example while you are sleeping.
  • Make sure your phone is running the latest software. For downloads and assistance, go to your local Nokia website's support page.

If the battery loses the power fast even though there is no features consuming the power, the battery may be wearing out and you need to replace it with a new one.

What are the simple troubleshooting steps to try when my Nokia Lumia phone is not working properly? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

It is possible to fix many phone problems yourself in a few minutes – including phone freezes or does not switch on, application crashes, sound problems and a blank display. To save yourself time, try these three fixes.

1. Restart your phone

If the phone hardware is jammed, you should first try restart your phone. This does not reset the Microsoft Account (Windows Live ID) or remove any consumer data.

Option 1: To perform the power reset for phones with integrated battery (phone has a special electronic circuit which switches off the power when the key combination is pressed):

  1. Switch the power On (if possible) and disconnect the charger.
  2. Press the Volume Down + Power Key and hold them for 15 seconds.
  3. You will feel vibration.
  4. The phone will reset and boot up automatically.

Option 2: To perform power reset for phones with removable battery:

  1. Remove the battery and reinsert it.
  2. Boot up the phone normally.

2. Update the software

You might not be using the most recent software for your phone. Updating to the latest version of your phone may resolve your issue.
You can check for the availability of Lumia software updates in your region here.

3. Reset your phone

Warning: This erases all the personal content in the phone, including apps that have been purchased and downloaded (may be re-downloaded again), and restores the factory settings.

To reset your phone to the state in which the phone was in the first time you turned it on, go to Settings > About and then Reset your phone.

If you lose your phone, you can reset your phone remotely. In this option you need have the Find My Phone feature enabled and your phone must be connected to mobile network.

1. Login to http://www.windowsphone.com.
2. Click on the drop down menu right next to your name, and select the device that you would like to erase.
3. At the top left corner, you will see the name and model of the Windows Phone.
4. Click on Erase your phone.

Why I can't make an outgoing call? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

Do the following:

  • Check that the SIM card is inserted properly.
  • Check the signal strength that is indicated by the signal indicators at the left side of the Nokia phone's display. To increase your Nokia phone's signal strength, try moving your Nokia phone slightly, or move towards a window if you're calling from inside a building.
  • If there is no network coverage at all, check the following:
    • you have not set your device to use 3G (UMTS) network only, use the dual mode (2G/3G) instead.
    • your phone is not in Offline or Flight mode.
  • Restart your phone and recheck.
  • Restart your phone to factory settings as described in your phone's user guide. Recheck.
  • If you continuously experience low signal strength in a certain area, it may be that network coverage is insufficient there. Your network operator can provide you with more information on network coverage.

What should I do if my phone is not ringing for an incoming call? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

Try the following troubleshooting tips:

  • Ensure that your phone is on and that there is sufficient signal strength.
    • Signal strength is indicated by the signal indicators at the left side of the phone's display. These indicators move up as the strength of the signal increases and down as the signal decreases.
    • To increase your phone's signal strength, try moving your phone slightly, or move towards a window if you're calling from inside a building.
  • If the phone's profile is set to Silent, Flight, Offline, or any other profile where ringing is silenced, it will not ring. Change the profile to General or Normal as instructed in the user guide. Check also the settings of your active profile, especially Ringing tone, Ringing type and Ringing volume. You may also try another Ringing tone, for example built-in Nokia tune, to rule out possible corruption of a transferred ringing tone.
  • Make sure that call divert is not activated.
  • Check if the headset is attached to your phone. For some phone models, the ring does not come through the speaker, only through the headset.
  • Make sure your device is running the latest software. For downloads and assistance, go to your local Nokia website's support page.
If the problem persists, contact your local Nokia Care Point for inspection.

Why are my calls dropped? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

Dropped calls or low sound quality during calls can result from low signal strength or momentary gaps in network coverage, either at your end or the other end of the connection.

Check the following:

  • Check the signal strength that is indicated by the signal indicators at the left side of the Nokia phone's display. These indicators move up as the strength of the signal increases and down as the signal decreases. If there is no network coverage at all, check if you have set your device to use 3G (UMTS) instead of the dual mode (enables 2G network access if 3G is not available).
  • To increase your Nokia phone's signal strength, try moving your Nokia phone slightly, or move towards a window if you're calling from inside a building.
  • Try your SIM card in another phone to make sure that it is not an issue in your phone.
  • If you continuously experience low signal strength in a certain area, it may be that network coverage is insufficient there. Your network operator can provide you with more information on network coverage.
  • If you believe that the problem may be with your Nokia phone instead of the network, contact your local Nokia Care point for inspection.
