You get an update message when you try to buy or download apps using Windows Phone Marketplace - Microsoft Knowledge Base

Average Rating

Symptoms

When you try to buy, download, update, or review applications using Windows Phone Marketplace, you receive a message to update your phone.

You need to update your phone using the Zune software on your computer. Some Zune and Marketplace experiences may be limited until you update.

Cause

Microsoft has made a series of infrastructure upgrades related to Windows Phone that affect Marketplace users in the following ways:

1. The ability to browse and buy Windows Phone apps through the Zune software has been removed, making Windows Phone Web Marketplace the only computer-based complement to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace experience.
2. Windows Phone devices must have the Windows Phone 7.5 release (operating system version Windows Phone OS 7.1) installed in order to purchase and download apps, as well as write reviews. This applies to both the Windows Phone Marketplace and Windows Phone Web Marketplace.

Note If you have not updated to Windows Phone 7.5, you can continue to browse apps and games available through Marketplace. However, you can no longer download or update apps on your Windows Phone.

Resolution

To use Marketplace to download or update apps on your Windows Phone, you will have to update your phone to Windows Phone 7.5.

Check the following table to find the problem you're experiencing and then try one of the accompanying solutions.
