Chat helps you hook up with no hassles by sending your real-time location in an instant message. This unique feature lets your friend pinpoint your position and share her own on Nokia Maps.
Chance meetings with friends are made easy. Pick out your places on Nokia Maps and choose where you want to publish your presence. Chat automatically updates your location status when you arrive at your hangouts.
As well as sharing your location, you can edit your status with what’s going on and stay up-to-the-minute with your friends. Status symbols on Chat show when you’re available, on the phone, or away.
Chat puts quick and easy instant messaging at your fingertips. You can also record and send voice messages to friends.

1. Getting started
What is Nokia Chat?
In Nokia Chat, you can chat with your friends, send voice messages to your chat partners, and indicate your availability to your friends. You can also show information about your location to your contacts.
What is the difference between Nokia Chat and other instant messaging clients that I’ve used?
Instant messaging (chat) is familiar from the PC world. Now you can have the same experience with your Nokia mobile device.
What do I need to get started?
To use Nokia Chat, you must have the following:
- A Nokia account, username, and password
- Mobile:
- A wireless data service plan with your wireless operator
- A compatible Nokia mobile device
- The Nokia Chat application on your Nokia mobile device, check which models are compatible
2. Sign-in and registration
I already have a Nokia account; can I use the same account for Nokia Chat?
If you already have a Nokia Account, you can use the same username and password for Nokia Chat.
Can I create a Nokia account from my mobile device?
To create a Nokia account from your mobile device, you first have to download the Nokia Chat client to your mobile device. When you log in for the first time, you can choose whether you want to use your existing Nokia account or to create a new one.
3. Downloading the client
How do I download the Nokia Chat application to my mobile device?
- Using PC
- To download the Nokia Chat software, click “Download”. Select "Save" in the dialog.
- After the download is complete, transfer the file from your compatible PC to your compatible mobile device using a USB cable, Bluetooth Connectivity, or MultiMediaCard.
- Access the file on your Nokia mobile device, and follow the instructions on the computer screen to install the Nokia Chat software.
- Using Mobile
- Open the Nokia Chat webpage through the browser on your mobile device.
- Click the file download, and follow the instructions on the display.

Can I get the Nokia Chat application for my existing device?
You can download the Nokia Chat application if you have a compatible Nokia mobile device. For more information on Download, see the Download section. To check whether your mobile device is compatible with Nokia Chat, see the compatible Nokia mobile devices section.
4. Using Nokia Chat
Why do I have to create a user profile? Can I change my profile information?
Your profile information is available to all your friends on your friend list. With your profile you tell them who you are and select how you want them to see you. You can edit your Nokia Chat profile information whenever you want. You can edit your screen name, your avatar, and your contact information, for example, phone numbers.
I don’t want anyone to see my Nokia Chat information
To hide your information, select Options > Settings > Account, and in the “Visibility in search” field select “Invisible”.
How can I add a new friend to my friend list?
To search and invite new friends to your friend list, select “Add friend” on your chat window. A search menu opens and you can search for your friends among registered Nokia Chat users by name or username.
I can’t find my friend with the search function; I think she/he doesn’t have a Nokia Account yet.
To invite a friend to join Nokia Chat, select “Recommend to friend”. The invitation is sent as a text message. Friends who don’t have a Nokia account yet can register and create their own account by clicking the link they have received in the invitation.
I received an invitation from my friend to join Nokia Chat, what do I have to do?
Your invitation message should include a link to a page where you can create an account and download the Nokia Chat mobile client to your mobile device. After you have created the account, you will receive a friend request from the friend who sent you the invitation. After you have accepted the request, you can start chatting with your friend.
Can I connect with my friends on other IM services?
You can add friends who have Google Talk™ and other XMPP/Jabber based IM services to your friend list, see their statuses, and chat with them.
How do I add friends from different service domains to my friend list?
To add friends from different service domains to your friend list, select Options > Add friend. Enter your friend’s username with domain, and select Options > Add as friends.
How can I inform my location to my friends?
To receive location information from your chat partner, you must have the Maps application. To send and receive location information, both the Maps and Positioning applications are needed.
To send your location to your friend, select “Send Location”. Your friend will see your location in the Maps application view.
To inform your friends about your hangouts without telling them your exact location, do the following:
Open the Nokia Maps application and create landmarks of the places that are important to you (enter an address, search it from the map, save as a landmark or by find, and save your current GPS location). You can close Nokia Maps. Open Nokia Chat and select Options > Settings > Presence > Location. Change the broadcasting setting to “On”. Then select which landmarks you want to broadcast and how frequently your location information is checked.
Can I change my status?
You can change your online status in the “My Status” menu. Your status is indicated in colours:
Green = Available
Blue = On the phone
Yellow = Away
Red = Do not disturb
Grey = Offline
You can also add free text to personalise your status message.
Will the chat history be stored on the device?
The chat history is available as long as the conversation is open. The conversation is deleted when you end the chat. To save parts of the discussion, you can use the copy / paste function and the Notes application.
Handovers: can I move between different hot spots? What if I move out from the WLAN hot spot?
You can move between different hot spots. If a wireless local area network (WLAN) connection is not available, the connection will be moved to GPRS (if allowed). You can use both WLAN and GPRS to ensure best possible combination for staying connected.
When you start using the application, you are prompted to select which WLAN and GPRS access points are used. To edit access point settings, select Options > Settings > Connection.
Does using Nokia Chat cost something?
The Nokia Chat application itself is free, but the usage of the application may involve the transmission of large amounts of data through your service provider's network. Contact your service provider for information about data transmission charges. A flat fee mobile data plan is strongly recommended. The Nokia Chat mobile software can also use a WLAN connection.
5. Troubleshooting
How do I change the password to my Nokia Chat service account?
To change the password to your Nokia Chat service account, log in to your account. In My Details (My profile), click “Change Password”. Enter your old password and your new password, and click “Save Password”.
What if I forget my password or username?
When you create an account, you are asked to choose a security question, for example, your father’s middle name. If you forget your username or password, select the link » Forgot your user ID or password? You are asked to give your username, phone number, or e-mail address, after which the system will ask your security question. Your username and a link to a page where you can reset your password will be sent to you in an e-mail.
How do I delete the Nokia Chat application?
The Nokia Chat application should be saved in Applications on your Nokia mobile device. Search for the "Nokia Chat" file, select the item, and Options > Remove. The application will be deleted.
6. Configuring Nokia Chat to your favourite IM client on PC
Most of us prefer using a PC keyboard over mobile device keyboard when we’re sitting next to our PCs while attending a blazing conversation. To make the most out of Nokia Chat while chatting - we now provide some simple instructions on how to configure your favourite IM client on PC to run on Nokia Chat.
Generally, the following instructions will apply to most XMPP-supporting IM clients, in case your favourite XMPP compatible IM client wasn’t featured in our guide:
1. Create Nokia Account in https://account.nokia.com/acct/register
2. Configure your account with the following details:
- Server Address: chat.ovi.com
- Server Port: 5223
- Enable “Force old SSL” or “Legacy SSL” [Edited 5.8.2008]
3. Log-in with your Nokia Account

Note that in some cases, when you’re behind a firewall, you may need to configure proxy settings too. For instructions and details of how that can be done, please refer to the IM client’s web page for help on how-to and contact your local network administrator for network specific details.
Configuring Psi:

To configure Psi to run on Nokia Chat, follow the steps:
1. Open Psi.
2. Click the Psi symbol and select Account Setup.
3. Click Add n the Jabber Accounts window
4. Name your account in the Name field, e.g. “Nokia Chat”
5. Check that Register new account is not selected.
6. Click Add.
7. Enter your Nokia Account username to Jabber ID field8. Click the Connection tab.
9. Select all checkboxes, except ‘Probe legacy SSL port.’
10. Enter chat.ovi.com in the Host field,
11. Enter 5223 in the Port field
12. Choose Legacy SSL in the Encrypt connection drop-down menu13. Click Save and your done!
Configuring Adium:

To configure Adium to run on Nokia Chat, follow the steps:
1. Start Adium
2. Select Preferences from Adium menu
3. Select Account preferences pane (should be the left-most tab)
4. Click the plus (+) button at the bottom left corner for adding a new account (select Jabber from the drop-down list)
5. Fill in your Nokia Account in the username field6. Tab over to Options tab and configure the following details:
- Connect server: chat.ovi.com
- Port: 5223
- Force old-style SSL: Tick the box
- Require SSL/TLS: Tick the box
7. Click OK and your done!
Configuring Pidgin:
To download Pidgin, please visit: http://www.pidgin.im/
To configure Pidgin to run on Nokia Chat, follow the steps:
1. Start Pidgin
2. Select Add/Edit from Accounts menu
3. Click Add from the Accounts dialog
4. Fill the Add account window with following details:
- Protocol: XMPP
- Username: your Nokia Account (without @ovi.com)
- Domain: ovi.com
- Password: you may enter your password if you want to sign on automatically, but it is recommended that you leave it empty for security reasons
- Remember password: check the box if you’d like Pidgin to remember your password (you won’t be prompted to enter it each time you sign in, if you select this option)
5. Click Advanced tab and configure it as follows:
- Require SSL/TLS: Tick the box
- Force old (port 5223) SSL: Tick the box
- Connect port: 5223
- Connect server: chat.ovi.com
6. Click Save and your done!
