Messages

Stay in touch with your friends, and send them text or multimedia messages, or start a chat.

You can open messages directly from the start screen. Tap messaging icon Messaging .

You can send and receive different kinds of messages:

  • Text messages

  • Multimedia messages that contain attachments, such as photos

  • Chat messages

Messages and chats between you and a particular contact are arranged into conversations.

When you want to get in touch with a contact, your phone can help you pick the best method. If your contact is signed in to a chat service, you can send a chat. Otherwise, you can send a text message instead.

If you make contact groups containing, for example, family or colleagues, you can send a message to a group.

With text and multimedia messages, you can quickly contact your friends and family.

  1. Tap messaging icon Messaging .

  2. Tap plus icon .

  3. To add a recipient from your contacts list, tap plus icon , or start writing a name. You can also type in a phone number. You can add more than one recipient.

  4. Tap the message box, and write your message.

    Tip:

    To add a smiley, tap smiley icon .

  5. To add an attachment, tap attachment icon and the file.

    Tip:

    You can also take a new photo while writing your message. Tap picture or video > camera icon , take a photo, and tap accept .

  6. To send the message, tap send icon .

Read a message

You can see on the start screen when you've received a message.

You can view the messages between you and a contact in one conversation thread. The thread can contain text messages, multimedia messages, and chats.

  1. Tap messaging icon Messaging .

  2. Tap a conversation.

Save an attachment

Tap the attachment, such as a photo, and tap options icon > save to phone .

Delete a conversation

Tap options icon > delete thread .

Reply to a message

Don't keep your friend waiting – reply to the message straight away.

  1. Tap messaging icon Messaging .

  2. In threads, tap the conversation containing the message.

  3. Tap the message box, and write your message.

    Tip:

    If you have more than one phone number for the contact stored in your phone, you can also send your reply to a different number. Tap switch icon to pick another phone number.

  4. Tap send icon .

Forward a message

Tap and hold the message, and tap forward .

Before forwarding the message, you can edit what's written or add or remove attachments.

Send a message to a group

Need to send a message to a group of people? Create a group in the People hub, and you can reach them all with a single message or mail.

  1. On the start screen, tap people icon People .

  2. Tap the group, and text or send email , and write and send your message.

Keep replies in one thread

When sending messages with a group of people, replies to you are shown as separate threads, unless you use Group text. When Group text is on, your group messages are sent as multimedia messages. Your service provider may charge accordingly. The available services may vary.

In Messaging, tap options icon > settings , and switch Group text on.

Want to remember your friend with a birthday song? Send your song as an audio message.

  1. When writing a message, tap attachment icon > voice note .

  2. Record your message, and tap done .

  3. Tap send icon .

Chat with your friends

Do you like chatting online with your friends? If you are out and about, you can send instant messages from your phone, no matter where you are.

You need a Microsoft account to chat. When you connect your Facebook account to your Microsoft account, you can use Facebook chat in Messaging. For more info, see the How-to section at www.windowsphone.com/ .

Before starting to chat, set up a chat service. Tap messaging icon Messaging , swipe to online , and follow the instructions shown on the phone.

Sign in to a chat service, if not signed in already.

  1. Tap messaging icon Messaging .

  2. Tap plus icon .

  3. To add a recipient from your contacts list, tap plus icon . Tap your friend's chat account to start chatting.

  4. Tap the message box, write your message, and tap send icon .
