Our aim as a company is to continuously improve the environmental sustainability of all our products.

That’s not just a media sound-bite. Rather than introducing only the occasional green device, we regularly launch sustainable innovations right across our product range.

What does eco-friendly mean?

Eco-friendly literally means earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment.

At Nokia we recognise our responsibility to influence positive environmental change across the globe. And with 1.3 billion people using our products, we see many opportunities to make a difference to the planet and its inhabitants.

We don’t wait until law requires us to implement environmental standards, but have repeatedly anticipated and implemented improvements well before legally required to do so.

Nokia’s green approach

Our environmental activities are integrated into everything we do. We achieve this by:

  • using only approved, tested and sustainable materials and substances in our products

  • improving the energy efficiency of our devices and accessories, including chargers

  • developing smaller and smarter packaging for our products

  • encouraging people to use our devices in ways that are responsible towards the environment, including recycling and using the energy saving features.

What can you do to help the environment?

All Nokia phones are made of materials that can be recovered and used to make new products or generate energy, which means nothing goes to waste.

So instead of dropping that old Nokia phone in the bottom drawer it makes good sense to recycle it. And did you know that if your handset battery is full but still plugged into a mains charger, it is still drawing energy from the electricity supply? To save on power, simply switch your Nokia device on to power save mode, which will help you to save handset energy.

Three steps to recycling

Step 1. Get over your old phone

100% of the material in a Nokia device can be recycled to make anything from musical instruments to  kitchen appliances and  park benches. Hang on though! Check first that a friend or family member doesn’t want your old handset.
If they don’t, it’s time to say goodbye.

Step 2. Save your digital memories

So you’ve decided to recycle your phone – that’s great – but don’t forget to back it up before you say goodbye.

Backing up your Nokia is easy. Nokia Suite is free software that lets you organise, store and share all the stuff on your handset with your computer.

Step 3. Find where you can recycle your handset

Okay, so you’ve backed up your old handset, you’ve removed the SIM and you’ve gathered any unwanted chargers, accessories or batteries to recycle – but where do you take them?

Simple. We’ve set around 6,000 recycling points in almost 100 countries around the world to drop off your old Nokia equipment and give it a new life

In India, we have laid out a robust recycling infrastructure across the country with over 1400 recycling bins installed. Find your nearest recycling point at Nokia Care Center, Nokia Priority Partners and Nokia Concept Stores.

We work with carefully selected companies who reclaim the materials from the phones and accessories we pass on to them. These companies are assessed on a regular basis to make sure they're doing things properly and that anything handed to them is recycled responsibly.
