How can I update my Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8?

Software updates from Nokia and Microsoft are safe to install, and your settings, apps, photos, and text messages remain safe and sound.

Software updates are free of charge, but to download the update, you need an internet connection, and data transmission costs may apply. For more info on the possible costs, contact your network service provider. To keep data costs down, we recommend that you use a Wi-Fi connection.

Your phone notifies you when an update is available for you.

Step 1. To view and to install the updates, just tap the notification message, and follow the instructions shown on your phone. You can install the update immediately, or postpone the update to a more convenient time.

Step 2. The update should take around 15-30 minutes, but it could take up to 60 minutes. You will not be able to use your phone during the update installation. Don’t worry if your phone restarts several times during the process, that’s completely normal.

Step 3. Update success! Now you can use your phone, and enjoy the new features and enhanced experience.

Tip: It is recommended that you use a Wi-Fi connection for the update.

How can I check if updates are available for my Nokia Lumia phone?

Update availability may vary depending on your phone model, region, and network service provider or carrier.

Your phone automatically checks for updates on a weekly basis. If you have a Wi-Fi connection, your phone downloads the update once available. To change the settings, or manually check for updates, just tap Settings > Phone Update.

How do I prepare for an update?

  • The size of an update package can be several megabytes, and therefore it is recommended that you use a Wi-Fi connection; this is also set as the default connection method on your phone. For more info on how to connect and use a Wi-Fi connection, check the Microsoft support page.
  • Before starting the update, make sure your phone has enough battery power. If the battery level is low, charge the battery before starting the update.
  • Check that your phone is set to the correct time and date. With a wrong date or time, your phone won’t be able to access the updates.
  • Make enough space on your phone for the update. If necessary, remove some apps or other large items. For more info, check the Microsoft support page.
  • It is also recommended that you create a backup before doing a software update. For more info, check the Microsoft support page.

What if I have trouble installing an update?

If the update is not successful, your phone remains in its previous software version with data intact. If you get an error code, write it down. With this info, you can check what went wrong at the Microsoft support page.
