I have a lower software version than the one displayed on nokia.com but can't update? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

The highest available software version for the phone model is shown on Nokia website, but the mentioned version may not always be correspondingly available as an update for your phone. Availability of the update depends on many factors, such as existing software version on your phone, regional restrictions, and approval of the software by your network service provider, operator or carrier. It may be due to one of these variables that currently the latest available software for you is of a lower software version than displayed on Nokia website.

New software may become available as update at a later date, so it's best to set up your phone in a way that it automatically tells you when a new software update is available. You can do this in the following way:

  1. Start the software update application on your phone. For most devices, you will find this application under Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone updates or  Menu > Applications > (Tools >) SW Update. If you don't find the software update application from these menu locations, check the correct location from the user guide.
  2. Select Options > Settings > Auto-Check for updates. With that in place, your phone will automatically check in specified intervals if there's a new software available and prompt you to start the update.

Note: Always check the software update availability information from the local Nokia website for your country only. You can change the website locale with the link on the footer of every nokia.com page. In case you have purchased your Nokia phone from another country, go to the local Nokia website of the origin country. Additionally, we recommend that you buy your Nokia phone from an authorized Nokia retailer in your home country. To check for the authorized retailers, go to Store Finder.

How do I ensure that all my music and games will work after the device software update? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

To ensure that DRM-protected content will work after the software update in the device, follow these steps:

  • Use Nokia Suite to backup the device memory including your music, photos, videos etc...
  • Note: Windows Media DRM protected content cannot be backed up and restored with this method but will have to be resynchronized with the PC to work again. Depending on the content subscription, additional rights may have to be retrieved from the content provider.
  • You may have to refresh the music library after updating the device.
  • Applications and games may need to be re-installed after using Nokia Suite by downloading them again from Nokia Store "My Stuff".

There is a blinking envelope icon on the display of my Nokia device. Why? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

The blinking closed envelope icon indicates the SIM card message memory is full.

Select Menu > Messaging > Options > (View folders > Options) > SIM messages and delete one or more SMS messages.

Note 1: Class 2 messages (for example, service messages from operators) are stored in the SIM card message memory. Once the SIM card message memory is full, Class 2 messages can't be received.

Note 2: You have used a Nokia S40 product before. In S40 products the SIM card message memory is filled before the device message memory. If you insert a SIM card with full message memory to another device, a blinking message icon appears on the display of your Nokia device.

Note 3: Other reason could be that there is not enough free memory available on the device to store the new message. To release a space go to Messaging > Inbox and remove unnecessary messages

What do I do if the memory is full? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

Memory full messages may occur if there are too many applications running at the same time or if there is not enough free space in the phone memory. Depending on the error message, the following actions can be taken:

"Memory Full: Close some applications and try again"

In this case there are too many applications active at the same time. The problem can be fixed by closing some of the applications:

  • Long press the Menu key to see the list of active applications.
  • Select the applications which are not needed and close them.

If this doesn't help, switch off and restart the phone.

"Memory Full: Delete or remove some data from C: Phone memory"

The phone notifies you if the phone memory or memory card memory is getting low. There can be different error messages shown this situation, e.g.:

  • "Memory Full: Delete or remove some data from C: Phone memory"
  • "Disk Full : Automatic retrieval of mailbox for exchange disabled"

To free phone memory, transfer some data to the memory card with the File mgr application (select Menu > Applications > File mgr.). Select or mark files to be moved, select Options > Organise > Move to folder and then the destination folder.

In order to free memory, you could also remove or move the following:

  • Messages from Inbox, Drafts and Sent folders in Messaging.
  • Retrieved e-mail messages from the phone memory.
  • Saved Web pages. Clear the web browser cache to free some memory (select Options > Clear privacy data > Cache).
  • Saved images, videos, or sound files.
  • Contact information.
  • Calendar notes.
  • Downloaded application packages.
  • If there are applications which are not needed any more, uninstall them (select Menu > Settings > Data mgr. > App.mgr. > Installed apps.).
  • Any other data that you no longer need

If possible, use the memory card instead of phone memory in the Camera application (select Options > Settings > Memory in use to define the memory where the images are stored). You can also use Nokia Suite to transfer images and video clips to your PC.

If you are deleting multiple items and any of the following notes are shown: Not enough memory to perform operation. Delete some data first or Memory low. Delete some data, try deleting items one by one (starting from the smallest item).

My memory card or mass memory is not working properly. What should I do? - Nokia FAQ

Average Rating

If your memory card or mass memory is not working properly, check the following:

  1. Use only compatible memory cards approved by Nokia for use with your device. Check the user guide or the technical specifications at Nokia support pages for more details
  2. Check that the memory card is properly inserted in the memory card slot. Push the memory card to the bottom of the slot.
  3. If possible, test with another memory card to see if the issue is in the memory card.
  4. Check that the device is not connected to PC. Depending on the device and the connection mode, the PC may reserve the mass memory and memory card for exclusive use and the memory drives cannot in this situation be accessed from the mobile device. Unplug your device from PC and try again.

If the memory card or mass memory is not working properly, try backing up any data from your device's memory card or mass memory to your PC, then format the memory card or mass memory by using your Nokia device. Depending on your device, the memory card can usually be formatted in one of the following applications (select the application, open the desired memory device and in the available options select the command to format the memory card or mass memory):

  • File mgr.
  • Memory tool
  • Memory card tool

Refer to your device's user guide for more information on how to format the memory card or mass memory.

If you get an error message during the formatting process or an error message after formatting stating that your device cannot read the memory card volume or mass memory, take the memory card or Nokia device (in case you have internal mass memory in your device) to your nearest Nokia care point.

Warning: Formatting your memory card or mass memory will permanently erase all data stored on the memory card or mass memory. Please back up all data stored on your memory card or mass memory before formatting.

Important: The memory card or mass memory inside your Nokia device should ONLY be formatted using your Nokia device. Do not attempt to format your memory card on another device such as a PC, otherwise your memory card may not work properly.
