Verify your USB Connection

Make sure your phone has a good connection to your computer. Possible causes of a bad connection can include:

You are not using the correct USB data sync cable, such the one that came with the phone. Some phones are also supplied with optional "charging" cables that cannot be used to establish a data connection with a computer. Try another cable, if possible.
There is dust or debris in the USB port on the phone. Try using a can of compressed air to clear the USB port on the phone to ensure a good connection.
The computer's USB port is bad. Try connecting to another port directly on the computer (don't use a USB hub).

If you have checked the USB port, try the steps below to trust the current certificate, create a new certificate, or reinstall the Zune software. (These can be done in any order.)

Trust the Zune certificate

1. Close the Zune software and disconnect your phone from your computer.
2. Open Certificate Manager. To do this, click Start, type certmgr.msc in the Start search bar, and then press your Enter key.

Things to Try

Try the following solutions to resolve the problem. They are presented in order from easiest to most difficult.

Restart your phone
Turning your phone off and then back on may resolve the issue.
To restart your phone, press and hold the Power button until you see Slide down to power off, then flick down. After it’s off, press the Power button to turn on your phone again.
If this restart sequence doesn’t work for your phone, try one of the following options:
Press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds. After it’s off, press the Power button to turn on your phone again.
If your phone has a replaceable battery, remove and reinsert the battery located under your phone’s back panel. Press the Power button to turn on your phone again.

Press and hold the volume down button and the power key

If your phone is unresponsive, it might display a big exclamation mark, a combination of a gear and lightning bolt, or it gets stuck showing your OEM's logo:

If your screen displays any of these images, try this: Press and hold both the volume down button and the power key for 10 seconds. This should get your phone to restart properly again.

Update your phone Software updates add new features that improve the performance and stability of your phone and may get it working again. If restarting your phone didn't resolve your problem, try updating to the latest version of Windows Phone 8.

To update your phone, follow these steps:
1. Swipe left to the App list, tap Settings, then tap Phone update.
2. Tap Check for updates.
Note You may have to make some room on your phone for the update. If necessary, you may have to delete apps, music, videos, or other media first.

How to install the update

1. Tap Download when prompted.
2. Do one of the following:
Tap Install, tap Show details, and then tap Install again. Your phone will restart, and then install the update.
Tap Postpone if you want to install the update later. To restart the update, go to Settings and then tap Phone.

Note It typically takes 5-10 minutes to install an update, but may take longer.
3. After your phone restarts, wait for it to migrate your settings, and then tap Done to finish the update.

Reset and restore your phoneResetting your phone will return it to the same state it was in the first time you turned it on. All your personal content--including text messages and apps you've downloaded--will be erased, and the phone will be reset to its factory settings. Here are two sets of steps to follow, depending on whether you can access your phone's Settings screen or not.

If you can access your phone's Settings screen:
Sync your data before the reset and restore. If you decide to reset your phone, you can back up apps, text messages, photos, and more to your Microsoft account in the cloud beforehand. For more information about backing up your phone, see Back up my stuff (http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8/basics/back-up-my-stuff) .

To back up your phone's information to the cloud:
1. Swipe left to the App list , tap Settings , and then tap Backup.
2. Tap App list + settings, and then tap Back up now.

To reset your phone:
1. Tap About, and then tap Reset your phone.
2. You'll receive two warnings. If you're absolutely sure you want to restore your phone to its factory settings, tap Yes, and then tap Yes again. (It might take a while for the process to complete.)
If you can't access your phone's Settings page:
1. Turn off your phone.
2. Turn on your phone again by pressing the volume down button until you see the exclamation mark .
3. Then, reset the phone by pressing the following four buttons in this order: Volume up, Volume down, Power, Volume down.
4. Your phone should now reset and restart itself. (It might take a while for the process to complete.)

To restore your phone

Once your phone is reset, you will be asked to set up your phone again (as if you had just purchased it). In the "Let's get started" process, enter the Microsoft account you originally entered. This will let you select a previous restore point. (If you receive a list of restore points, select the most recent point.)

1. When you first set up your phone, sign in using the same Microsoft account you used when you created your backup.
2. When prompted to restore your phone, tap the backup you want to use, tap Next, and then tap Next again.
3. Wait for the backup to download, and then tap Next.
4. Do one of the following:
a. Enter passwords for your restored accounts, and then tap Next.
b. Tap Skip if you want to enter your passwords later.
5. Tap Done.

Windows Phone 7 Secure Digital Card Limitations - Microsoft Knowledge Base

Average Rating

Summary

This article provides information to help you understand how Windows Phone 7 devices use SD cards, the performance requirements of SD cards for Windows Phone 7 devices, and how your phone will behave if you remove the SD card or add a new one.

Some Windows Phone 7 devices include a Secure Digital (SD) card slot underneath the battery cover. If you buy a Windows Phone 7 device that includes an SD card slot, you should be aware of several important differences from other devices that use SD cards:

The SD card slot in your phone is intended to be used only by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) that built your phone and your Mobile Operator (MO). These partners can add an SD card to this slot to expand the amount of storage on your phone.
To help ensure a great user experience, Microsoft has performed exhaustive testing to determine which SD cards perform well with Windows Phone 7 devices. Microsoft has worked closely with OEMs and MOs to ensure that they only add these cards to Windows Phone 7 devices.
You should not remove the SD card in your phone or add a new one because your Windows Phone 7 device might not work properly. Existing data on the phone will be lost, and the SD card in your phone can't be used in other Windows Phones, PCs, or other devices.

More information

Understanding How Windows Phone 7 Devices Use SD Cards

If your Windows Phone 7 device contains an SD card, you should think of it as a permanent component of your phone, not as removable storage. The Windows Phone 7 operating system treats the SD card as an integrated part of the phone. This is in contrast to other devices, where you can use an SD card to increase the memory available to the device at any time or to transfer files to other devices. The phone’s operating system integrates the SD card with the phone:
When you start your phone for the first time.
When your phone is reset to its original factory settings. This is called a factory reset. This is a task that is typically only performed by OEMs or MOs.

When the operating system integrates the SD card with your phone:
1. It reformats the SD card.
2. It creates a single file system that spans the internal storage and the SD card.
3. It locks the card to the phone with an automatically generated key.
From this point on, the phone’s operating system uses all of the available memory as a single storage space for storing applications and data. The phone will stop working properly if you remove the SD card, and the SD card cannot be read by another phone, device, or PC.

Performance Requirements for SD Cards

The SD card in a Windows Phone 7 device must meet certain performance requirements for the phone to function optimally. If the SD card does not meet these performance requirements, the phone will have portions of memory that meet the performance needs of the operating system (the internal storage) and portions of memory that do not meet the needs of the operating system (the SD card). This can lead to poor and unpredictable performance when using the phone. This article uses the term Windows Phone 7 compliant to refer to SD cards that meet the performance requirements for Windows Phone 7 devices.

Determining whether an SD card is Windows Phone 7 compliant is not a simple matter of judging its speed class. Several other factors, such as the number of random read/write operations per second, play a role in determining how well an SD card performs with Windows Phone 7 devices.

What to Expect if You Modify the SD Card Slot in a Windows Phone 7 Device

You may experience the following issues if you remove or replace the SD card in a Windows Phone 7 device, or if you add an SD card to a Windows Phone 7 device that has an empty SD card slot.
Removing the SD Card: If you remove an SD card that has already been integrated with the phone, the phone displays an error message that tells you to reinsert the SD card. All phone functionality is disabled except for the ability to make emergency calls. The phone will function normally again only if you reinsert the original SD card and then start the phone.
Integrating a Phone with a non–Windows Phone 7 Compliant SD Card: If a non–Windows Phone 7 compliant card is integrated with the phone, you might notice the following performance issues when you use your phone:
Applications might start more slowly or not at all.
Transitions between some application screens might stutter.
Some applications might not respond at times.
Note In some cases, these performance issues might only be evident after using the phone for some time. For example, if your phone has 8 GB of internal memory and you integrate a non-compliant SD card with the phone, you might notice the performance issues only after the 8 GB of internal memory is filled with applications and media.
Integrating a Phone with a Different Windows Phone 7 Compliant SD Card: If your phone already has an SD card and then a different Windows Phone 7 compliant card is integrated with the phone, you will lose any data that was stored on the phone, including any applications that you installed from the Marketplace hub. Examples of data that might be stored on the SD card include manually linked contacts, start customizations, and data that applications do not store remotely.
Adding an SD Card to a Phone with an Empty SD Card Slot: If you purchase a Windows Phone 7 device with an empty SD card slot and you add an SD card to the phone after you start it for the first time, the phone will continue to work properly, but it will not recognize the SD card. The phone will not save applications or files to the SD card.

To use an SD card with the phone, a Windows Phone 7 compliant card must be integrated with the phone in one of the scenarios described above in the section Understanding How Windows Phone 7 Devices Use SD Cards.

Average Rating

SYMPTOMS

When you download or update the Zune software, you are unable to accept the Zune Terms of Service (TOS).

THINGS TO TRY

To start, here are some tips:
Sign out of all programs and services that require your Windows Live ID before you try to accept the TOS.
Make sure that you are using the correct user name and password. If you forgot your Windows Live ID password, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article for information about how to reset your password:
935255 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935255/ ) How to change or reset the password for your Windows Live ID
Note If you have a Hotmail, Messenger, or Zune account, then you have a Windows Live ID.
If this is a child account, make sure that it has parental consent.
If you still aren't able to accept the TOS, try following these steps to resolve the issue:
1. If you are trying to accept the TOS from the Zune software when you sign in to the Zune Marketplace, follow these steps:
a. Visit Zune.net.
b. After you sign in, accept the TOS again when asked.
c. If you succeed, sign in to the Zune Marketplace.
2. Clear your Internet cache and cookies. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Open Internet Explorer.
b. On the menu bar, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
c. On the General tab under Browsing history, click Delete.
d. Check only the boxes next to Temporary Internet Files and Cookies.
e. Click the Delete button.
f. Click the Close button.
g. Close all Internet Explorer windows.
h. Try to sign in, and then accept the TOS.
3. Validate that the Date and Time Properties settings on your computer are accurate. To do this, follow these steps.

For Windows 7 or Windows Vista
a. Click Start , type timedate.cpl in the Start Search box, and then click the Enter key.
b. Verify that the correct date and time appear. If you want to adjust a setting, click either Change date and time or Change time zone, as appropriate.

Note A User Account Control window may appear after you click Change date and time. If this occurs, click Continue. To change the date and time, you may have to be an administrator on this computer.
c. If you make any adjustments, click Ok to close the Date and Time Settings windows or the Time Zone Settings window.
d. Click OK.

For Windows XP
a. Click Start, click Run, type timedate.cpl, and then click OK.
b. On the Date & Time tab, verify that the correct date and time appear.
c. Make the adjustments that you want, and then click OK.
4. If you still cannot sign in, we recommend that you delete your browsing history. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Open Internet Explorer, and then click Tools.
b. Click Internet Options.
c. On the General tab under Browsing history, click Delete.
d. Check the box next to History, and then click the Delete button.
e. Click the Apply button, and then click the OK button.

What to do if you believe your Windows Phone account has been stolen - Microsoft Knowledge Base

Average Rating

Summary

If your account has been compromised, you may experience one of the following scenarios:
You notice unauthorized charges.
You receive a pop-up windows or message, such as an achievement that you don’t recognize or that you've signed in from another location.
You cannot login to your Microsoft account (formerly known as Windows Live ID) to change your password.
You notice unrecognized strong proofs associated with your account. (For more information about proofs, see #1 in the More Information below.)
If you encounter any of the above scenarios, follow the steps below:
1. Change your Password
When you suspect something suspicious has happened with your account, you should change your password immediately.
Go to https://account.live.com/ and see if you can still log into your Microsoft account.
If you can, change your password immediately and setup strong proofs (if none exist). We highly recommend setting up an SMS and Trusted PC under Account Information section, then go to step 2.
If you cannot sign in to your Microsoft account to change your password or if you notice unrecognized strong proofs, skip to Step 3.
2. Check your bill
Go to http://billing.microsoft.com/ and check for any suspicious purchases. As with any billing statements, you should check this on a regular basis.
3. Contact Windows Phone Support, if needed.

Contact support if:
There are unauthorized charges on your account.
You are unable to change your password.
Your gamertag has changed.

We can guide you through the next steps. To help us, please have the following information ready:
The Microsoft account associated with your gamertag.
An alternate email that is different than the one associated with your Microsoft account.
You may also need the credit card associated with your account.
To contact Windows Phone Support visit http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=227747 .

More information

Follow this checklist to make sure your Windows Phone account is as secure as possible.
1. Add additional security proofs to your Microsoft account

Your Microsoft account allows you to create your own spare set of keys or "proofs" in case you lose your password or access to your account using the following four methods:
Mobile number. Adding a mobile phone number can help us verify that this is your account. Also, if you forget your password, you can use this number to reset your password.
Tip We strongly recommend that you set this up now as the primary way of retrieving your account back to you in the event it gets compromised.
Trusted PC. A unique proof that lets you link your Microsoft account with one or more of your personal computers. Then, if you ever need to regain control of your account by resetting your password, you simply need to be using your computer and we will know you are the legitimate owner.
Email address. Used to support password reset notifications. You can have one or more email addresses associated with your account.
Secret question. If you forget your password, we'll ask for your secret answer to verify your identity. Only you should know your secret question and secret answer.
Tip Use an answer that is completely irrelevant to the question being asked. For example, if your question is "Mothers' birthplace," then use Windows98se as your secret answer.

To add password reset information:
Go to the https://account.live.com/p/ webpage, and then sign in with your Microsoft account.
2. Create a strong password on your Xbox LIVE account

Using a simple password that is in a dictionary or the name of your pet dog can be very easy to guess. Create a strong password that includes a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters (for example, #, $, %, ^, &, and *).
Tip Think of a memorable sentence from your favorite film, book or song lyric then take the first letter of each word in the sentence, then add meaningful numbers and add special characters to make the password strong then https://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/password-checker.aspx to see how strong your password is.
3. Use different usernames and passwords for different sites

Use different usernames and passwords to different online sites, especially important sites which hold financial or personal information. If you use the same username and password everywhere, and they're stolen, you could lose access to all of your accounts at once.
4. Take caution when using your Microsoft account in public places or a shared computer

If you check your Hotmail account, sign into xbox.com, or use another service which requires you to use your Microsoft account credentials on a public computer (such as an Internet café), take caution in that these computers may not offer the same protection that you might have at home. We recommend that if you are looking to use a public computer that you use a single-use code instead of your password when signing in with your Microsoft account. Find out more about how to set this up here.
If you do have to use your regular Microsoft account password, remember to sign out and close any browsers when finished.
5. Avoid sharing personal information

Share your Microsoft account only with people you know and trust. Treat your personal information online the same way you would offline--follow the same rules as you do in the real world as you do online.
6. Never share any personal details about you or your account

Do not give your full name to strangers over the Internet. Do not put your full name in any public facing profile.
Keep your physical address private. Telling someone what school you go to or what neighborhood you live in can be enough to locate more information about you. Think of all the personal information that you have likely posted to social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, or Windows Live SkyDrive that someone could use to pose as you. Do not put your full physical address in your profile.
Do not give out your primary Microsoft account as an email address to strangers. Set up a secondary email account at http://www.hotmail.com/ , which you can use for communication with unknown people, mailing lists, etc. Maintain a strong password on the secondary email account as you do for your primary account.
Do not unnecessarily reveal information about yourself or your accounts. Be wary of anyone asking you for information that they do not need.
Do not share your password or personal information with anyone contacting you who is presenting themselves as a customer support agent or affiliated with Windows Phone, Xbox, Zune or Microsoft. If you are concerned that the contact might not be legitimate, contact Windows Phone, Xbox, or Zune Support. Microsoft will never ask for your password in email, through instant messaging, or over the phone. Enter your Microsoft account password only at known Microsoft sites or on the phone.
7. Install or update your Virus, Spyware, Malware protection software for your computer

Make sure you are running your virus protection software, and that it is up to date. If you don’t have any protection software installed we strongly recommend you do so now. Microsoft Security Essentials is free Antivirus software available for download that also protects against spyware and other malicious software.
8. Update your web browser and PC with latest security fixes

To ensure your web browser and computer is up to date with the latest security fixes, check to make sure you have the latest updates from Windows Update .
9. Make sure your browser phishing filters are turned on

Enabling these in your web browser helps detect phishing websites, protects you from downloading or installing malware (malicious software), and can alert you of any potential scamming websites. Normally these are turned on by default; however it's best to double check:
Internet Explorer: Select the "gear" icon on the tool bar, select Safety, and then select Turn On Smart Screen Filter.
For all other browsers: Check the browser's online help.

10. Only log in to Microsoft trusted websites with your Windows Live credentials
Is the website an official Microsoft site? Beware of websites which ask for your Windows LIVE account details, especially sites which offer deals that are too good to be true, such as free Microsoft Points. Check the address bar in your browser before entering any details. You can identify common Microsoft sites by the following addresses:
Xbox.com
Kinectshare.com
Microsoft.com
xbox.mobi
Zune.net
live.com
getgamesmart.com
XNA.com
lionhead.com
forzamotorsport.net
Hotmail.com
Passport.net

11. Don’t click links in emails, go to the site directly and log in

If you see a link in a suspicious email message, don't click on it. You can generally spot suspicious emails by
Alarmist messages and threats of account closures.
Deals that sound too good to be true.
Bad grammar and misspellings.

Instead, type out the address in your web browser to see if you are going to the actual company’s website.
