A-G  H-N  O-Z

AMR
Adaptive Multirate Codec.
Speech codec that adapts its operation optimally according to the prevailing channel conditions.

Chat
Chat is a way of sending short, simple text messages that are delivered over TCP/IP protocols to online users (network service). Your contact list shows you when the contacts on the list are online and available to participate in a chat conversation. When you have written and sent your message, it stays on the display. The reply message appears below your original message.

Digital signature
A digital signature is an electronic signature that may be used for authentication during business transactions. It also checks that the content of the transaction has not been altered during transfer. Digital signatures are available with security-enabled SIM cards (with WIM). Please contact your service provider/network operator for further details and availability.

DTMF
Dual Tone Multi-Frequency.
A signaling method used in pushbutton dialing and touchtone dialing.

EDGE
Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution; Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution. Radio interface modulation technique that increases HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) data rates.

(E)GPRS
Enhanced General Packet Radio Service; enhanced GPRS.
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) whose data rate is increased up to threefold with EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) modulation.

IMAP4
Internet Message Access Protocol.
Version 4 of IMAP allows a client to access and manipulate e-mail messages in a remote mailbox in a way that is functionally equivalent to manipulating local mailboxes.

IrDA
Infrared data port.
A data port that uses infrared data association (IrDA) as the standard for wireless communications between compatible computers and mobile phone devices. For example, to update the phone list on your compatible IrDA-enabled PC, you would line up the infra-red ports on each device and then transfer the phone information to your PC. This is a wireless transfer so you don't need a cable, but you may need phone-supporting software, e.g. PC Suite.

Java™
Java™ is a programming language developed by Sun Microsystems. Java™ technology includes two elements: a programming language, and an application environment in which programs written in the Java™ language can be executed. The Java™ programming language syntax is similar to C++, both being object oriented. The main difference between the C++ and Java™ languages is that the application developer needs to compile the C++ source code into a native machine code that works only on the specific target device, whereas the Java™ language code is interpreted in the target device by a so-called Java™ virtual machine. This is the mechanism that makes Java™ applications portable, i.e. a Java™ application works in all devices with a similar Java™ platform.

The Nokia 7200 supports the Java™ 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) platform, a part of Java™ technology specially designed for consumer electronics products. More specifically, the platform is based on the industry standard Mobile Information Device Profile 1.0 (MIDP 1.0), which provides essential functionality to create applications for mobile phones. Java™ applications created for this platform are commonly called "MIDlets."

MCN
Micro Cellular Network.
A radio network consisting of micro cells that provide traffic channel resources for both micro cellular and normal GSM use.

Night mode
Camera mode for taking photos in dim lighting conditions.

POP3
Post Office Protocol
Version 3 permits a workstation to dynamically access a maildrop on a server.

Pop-Port™
The Pop-Port™ connection is a system interface for enhancements, widening your selection of phone add-ons. And as the Pop-Port interface will be the standard across several Nokia phone models, it will enable better compatibility between your phone and enhancements, allowing for more intelligent control of your mobile life.

Presence-enhanced contacts
Presence-enhanced contacts enable you to conveniently share your availability information with your colleagues, family and friends. You can set your status to be Available, Busy or Not Available, and include a message of your own.

Proxy
A server or entity which retrieves information from the Internet for workstations and stores the information that the workstations frequently use to speed up retrieval and enhance network security. For example, in using the Web, the proxy speeds up the downloading of those web pages located behind slow or congested network connections.

Screen name
A user-definable nickname used in a chat conversation.

Shared memory
The following features in this phone may share memory:
  • Contacts
  • Text
  • Chat and multimedia messages
  • E-mails
  • Voice tags and SMS distribution lists
  • Images
  • Ringing tones
  • Video clips and sound clips in Gallery
  • Camera
  • Calendar
  • To-do notes
  • Java™ games and applications
  • Notes application.
Using any such features may reduce the memory available for any features sharing memory. This is especially true with heavy use of any of the features.

TCP/IP
Communication protocol used to transmit data over networks, on the Internet as well as on private networks.

Usage rights lists
Usage rights list in the Gallery folders to view the list of all available usage rights. You can delete the rights, for example delete expired rights.

Your phone supports a usage rights system to protect acquired content. A piece of content, for example a ringing tone, can be protected and associated with certain usage rules, such as number of usage times and a certain usage period. Always check the delivery terms of any content and usage rights before acquiring them, as they may be subject to a fee.

XHTML
Extensible HyperText Markup Language.
XHTML is the next-generation version of HTML based on XML for sharing the basic content across mobile phones, PDA's, desktop computers, TV's and pagers. It allows for an improved user experience with a more pleasant graphical appearance.
