Removing stress from the daily commute

In the United States alone traffic congestion creates and extra 4.2 billion hours of travel time causing 2.9 billion gallons of extra fuel to be burned, with a total cost of $78 billion. (Source: 2007 Urban Mobility Report, Texas Transportation Institute)

Mobile Millennium, the next generation traffic monitoring service from Nokia research, helps commuters like University of California, Berkeley professor Lisa Alvarez-Cohen avoid those costs. She can use real-time traffic data gathered through GPS-enabled devices to change her route or leave a little later to avoid congestion. Less traffic congestion saves time, frustration, and fuel and reduces CO2 emissions.

The project began in November 2008, and is a collaboration between Nokia, NAVTEQ, the University of California, Berkeley's California Center for Innovative Transportation and the California Department of Transportation and over 5,000 people have used the system to date.
