Fighting disease and saving lives

Every year hundreds of Brazilians die of dengue fever. Mosquito bites can spread outbreaks quickly, with devastating effect.

Working with Amazonas State Health Department (SUSAM) and the Health Vigilance Foundation (FVS), a team of Nokia researchers developed Nokia Data Gathering to help fight the spread of this disease and increase the effectiveness of treatment.

Health workers use Nokia Data Gathering to collect detailed outbreak statistics from remote villages. Health officials can see instantly and reliably where the greatest outbreak risks are and take immediate life-saving action.

With the help of this solution, 50 health workers equipped with Nokia E61 and Nokia E71 devices reduced the number of cases of dengue dramatically from 3522 in 2008 to 245 in 2009. Next year, the Health Department plan to use Nokia Data Gathering across the entire state of Amazonas, and are looking at expanding the service to include other major diseases such as Malaria and Yellow Fever.
