Hamburg Port Authority, Deutsche Telekom & Nokia for First Large Scale Industrial Commercial 5G Trial
The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), Deutsche Telekom and Nokia deployed a 5G network in the 8,000-hectare Port of Hamburg. It has evolved from a proof of concept testbed into an operational network which impressed the judges “because network slicing can be challenging in such a complex and changing environment.” The Hamburg port is the 3rd largest container harbor in Europe. The 5G network architecture is the only option for managing a complex infrastructure more efficiently and effectively than running expensive fibre. Implemented use cases at Hamburg range from secure automated port operations to traffic management via connected, intelligent transportation systems.

Broadband Award 2018: Best Fixed Access solution
[showmore]
This award recognizes Nokia for spurring development in fixed access and improving the end-user experience, and making a real contribution to the industry. Since the beginning of PON, Nokia has arguably done more than any other technology provider to support the adoption of fiber broadband, taking the technology faster and further than ever before. Nokia's fiber access solutions have a long history of industry firsts, including the first mass deployment of FTTH, the first Gigabit service and the first NG-PON deployment. Nokia's recent innovations are all in the same vein: fixed access network slicing allows network operators to provide a trueNetwork as a Service; Nokia Fiber Access solution is the first to support a multi-vendor ONU-OLT environment through vOMCI (virtual ONU management and control interface). It decouples OLT and ONT management software and allows any control interface specification to be used to connect various vendors' ONTs to a single OLT. This gives network operators greater choice and flexibility, which reduces both CAPEX and OPEX costs.

Broadband Award 2018: Best Wireless Broadband
[showmore]
Nokia received recognition for its Wireless PON solution which allows operators to extend their fiber networks with 60 GHz 802.11ad WiGig technology. Operators globally look to wireless technology as a new, low cost alternative for connecting homes. On the surface, it looks like the worlds of wired and wireless are colliding, but what we see are two uniquely different broadband networks maturing and evolving in ways that are mutually beneficial, with fiber as the high-speed access infrastructure and wireless providing a cost-effective connection to the home. This really improves the service provider's business case. More importantly, it makes it so that we can add gigabit services to subscribers out beyond the normal fiber footprint.

Broadband Award 2018: Best Network Convergence
[showmore]
Access to the network is capital intense. The only option to reduce the investment risk is to have the physical networks scale over more users, more services and more market segments.
One of the first applications of virtualization in the fixed network is being pioneered by Nokia. Network slicing is a virtualization use case that enables a single infrastructure to run virtual access networks. By slicing the infrastructure into independent virtual networks, operators can maximize usage for different services, while protecting performance and simplifying operations. This changes the perspective for network service providers to offer the Network as a Service (NaaS).
Network slicing gives full flexibility to manage, operate and automate services on top of the physical network. This is different from traditional active network sharing where the access network is purely managed by the network provider with limited real-time interaction and control for other operators.

Broadband Award 2018: Best Broadband Delivering Social Impact
[showmore]
Innovation is never done just for the sake of innovation. This award, recognizing the social impact of broadband, was a joint award won by Nokia and Chorus for their project realized in New Zealand. Connectivity is an essential part of New Zealand's growing economic and social infrastructure, and especially important for rural communities. Chorus and the New Zealand government, with the support of Nokia, partnered together on the Rural Broadband Initiative to radically improve connectivity in the most remote parts of the country. The programme has delivered 1 Gb/s fibre broadband to 1,000 rural schools, ensuring that students now have access to the same opportunities as their urban counterparts. The availability of gigabit broadband has had a profound impact on rural schools, teachers, students and their communities.

Glotel Awards 2017: AI Initiative of the year
[showmore]
"If you believe the media, the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will almost certainly lead to Armageddon or (at the very least) losing your job to a robot.
Here at Nokia, we’re more optimistic. For one thing, our engineers have decades of experience and building an AI to replace them would be unfeasibly expensive and difficult! No, we see AI complementing our workforce and improving service delivery – we think of it more as ‘Augmented Intelligence’ supporting an experienced engineer, providing insights and solutions to help our engineers do their job. This approach is central to the Shannon Intelligence framework developed by Nokia Bell Labs, and named after a former employee, Claude Shannon, the so-called ‘father of information theory’.
We’re already making this a reality with the launch of new Analytics Services powered by Nokia AVA, our big data platform. These services use AI tools including Similar Ticket Recognition, our MIKA digital assistant and software ‘robots’ to automate repetitive, time intensive tasks." BBWF Awards 2017
[showmore]
The BBWF's annual Broadband Awards are regarded as the most prestigious recognition of excellence in the broadband marketplace. This year, on the 25th of October at the Meistersaal in Berlin, Nokia won two of the most important and relevant Broadband Awards:
1. Achievement in Network Virtualization, awarded for Nokia’s Software Defined Access Network (SDAN) solution launched in early October, is an important recognition for Nokia’s strategy of taking a pragmatic approach that is open, standardized and vendor-agnostic to virtualize those parts of the network that significantly impact a service provider's operations. With SDAN, Nokia has collaborated with more than 30 service providers to address surging customer demand by smoothly integrating legacy as well as new cloud services.
2. Best Consumer 10Gbps consumer service based on next-generation PON, with SK Broadband. South Korea’s SK Broadband is one of the leading service providers in fiber ultra-broadband in terms of network coverage, number of users and speeds offered. Using Nokia’s XGS-PON (next generation fiber offering 10 Gbps symmetrical bandwidth) SK Broadband is greatly improving the broadband experience of its customers. This award underscores Nokia’s leadership in next-generation fiber broadband by working closely with game-changing service providers across the world.
These Broadband Awards are a wonderful recognition of the innovation Nokia is continuously bringing to the market, and the difference we are making to our customers and their customers.
