This paper clarifies the three categories of network slicing and discusses both the hard and soft traffic isolation mechanisms used to provide physical/logical separation of network instances. It identifies drawbacks with the new Metro Transport Network being defined in ITU-T to support hard isolation, then describes how the Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) can provide flexible hard and/or soft isolation for traffic and synchronization distribution.
