In this paper, we look at the IEC 61850-based substation communications foundation that can be extended to the WAN and FAN for automation everywhere. We will also explore an IEC 61850 blueprint that enables substation virtualization. In doing so, we will discover the many positive commercial and environmental benefits that this approach can bring to the Utilities industry.
