Non-3GPP interworking function (N3IWF)
N3IWF is the 5G evolution of ePDG, enabling secure Wi-Fi and other non-3GPP access to integrate natively with the 5G Core. It strengthens identity protection, supports NAS-native services, delivers granular QoS, and improves mobility by aligning non-3GPP access with 5G authentication, policy, and service control.
By extending 5G capabilities beyond the radio network, N3IWF helps operators improve security, simplify migration from ePDG, reduce signaling during inter-access mobility, and create new revenue opportunities such as secure public Wi-Fi, premium AI traffic handling, and mission-grade connectivity for government and defense.
