Industry cooperation on 5G is taking shape – Nokia plays key role

Five important industry cooperation projects kicked off

On July 1, a number of research projects began within 5G Infrastructure Public-Private Partnership (5G-PPP) that is part of the largest global research and innovation program Horizon 2020. 5G-PPP is a joint initiative of the ICT industry and the European Commission to define future 5G communication systems.

The research projects will facilitate the upcoming standardization of 5G by consensus building and contributing to the 5G technology portfolio. Looking at the various announcements and claims from different vendors, it might be worthwhile to provide an overview of what is going on and which project does what. In a nutshell, I would say:

* The projects follow a well-defined work split outlined below. * There is broad involvement from different partners which insures the best ideas are being adopted no matter where they come from. It’s of particular importance that partners outside the telecom sector are engaged to prepare the system for new use cases. * The European initiative works closely with industry initiatives in other regions for a truly global 5G system. * Nokia is a driving force and has taken various leadership roles in five projects: 5G-NORMA, METIS-II, FANTASTIC-5G, mmMAGIC and Xhaul.

Clearly defined work split covering the full range of 5G technology 

5G-NORMA is tasked to develop the novel, adaptive and future-proof 5G multi-service network architecture which will, for example, provide new ways to manage QoS/QoE and enable the flexible use of network functions. Beyond the technical work, the benefits for society and the industry will be analyzed. In 5G-NORMA, Nokia provides the overall project coordinator role and leads the work package on flexible RAN design.

METIS-II will design the overall 5G radio access network (RAN) and prepare concerted actions towards regulatory and standardization bodies. METIS-II is going to build on the results of METIS FP7. Nokia holds the technical coordinator role here and leads the overall 5G RAN design and spectrum work packages.

The FANTASTIC-5G project is going to develop a flexible air interface below 6 GHz for a multitude of services and devices while keeping the system simple. Beside simulations, FANTASTIC-5G will even provide hardware proof-of-concepts. Nokia leads the work package for network design and focuses on waveform, frame design, and radio resource management.

mmMAGIC focuses on higher frequency bands above 6 GHz including the so-called mmWave spectrum above 30 GHz. Goals include identifying 5G spectrum candidates and developing a new radio interface suitable for access, backhaul and fronthaul as well as concepts for mmWave technology integration with other 5G network components. Nokia is well-positioned here and leads the work package on RAN functions, architecture, and network integration.

Finally, the Xhaul project targets an integrated fronthaul/backhaul transport solution to flexibly interconnect distributed 5G radio access and core network functions. This will be achieved by software-defined reconfiguration of all network elements in a multi-tenant and service-oriented management environment. Nokia leads the work package on Xhaul Control and Data planes.

Nokia is a leading contributor to 5G radio system and overall architecture

Nokia continues to foster its position as technology leader of the overall 5G system design through:

* Its strong engagement and technical management role in METIS-II, * Its role leading the 5G architecture project 5G NORMA, and * Its role leading the architecture and system design related work packages in the 5G-PPP projects mmMAGIC and FANTASTIC-5G.

In addition to its contributions in these projects, Nokia also holds the chair position of the entire 5G-PPP Infrastructure Association Board and participates in several overall coordinating workgroups of the 5G-PPP Initiative. On top of that, Nokia participates in a Coordinating Support Action (CSA) project called EURO-5G for effective and efficient co-operation between all projects of the 5G-PPP, all associated partners, the European Commission and related national initiatives.

All in all, industry cooperation on 5G is taking shape. We are looking forward to the results.
