5G networks, coming to life soon!

This week the communications community will converge on the great city of London to be a part of London Tech Week, an annual smorgasbord of innovation and technology from the cloud, connected cars, Artificial Intelligence/machine learning, and IoT.  This year, 5G World will be added to the array of tech forums and will host multiple keynotes, technology tracks and a demo showcase in the expo. Over 15,000 attendees are expected and this will be the largest 5G forum to date where operators, solution providers, and IoT specialists will gather to exchange ideas and showcase their latest products and solutions, while discussing how to move the industry forward.

Although 5G is not expected to begin widespread deployment until 2019-2020, its promise is the talk of the industry today.  In addition to being the next G (generation) of wireless capability sure to provide faster download speeds and better connectivity, it provides much more than its predecessors using new radio technologies to deliver ultra-low latency, and machine to machine connectivity that will allow everything to be connected and smart.  This opens up  myriad use cases that will change the lives of consumers and the way enterprises conduct their business.

In order to bring this new reality to life, a next generation network infrastructure is critical.  This end-to-end network must be software-defined and take advantage of network function virtualization (NFV), which will allow operators to program their network based on service level agreements and exciting new use cases (VR, autonomous driving, telemedicine, etc.) that will place varying demands on the network. Intel is contributing to industry efforts to provide a runway for operators to start implementing this next generation network, preparing for a smooth transition to 5G.

Sharing a common vision of 5G, Intel and Nokia have established a track record of industry leading collaboration with the implementation of Multi-access Edge computing, mmWave and distributed cloud technology in various 5G trials across the globe, while also creating joint labs to pilot and test 5G use cases. Both companies are also actively contributing to the standards bodies (3GPP, ETSI) that are defining the requirements for 5G, participating in the 5G Auto Association and building ecosystems that offer a diversity of solutions, which are commercially available today.  For example, the Nokia AirFrame Data Center solution enables full cloud based applications to accelerate service delivery, while our latest offering, the Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processor Family will allow 3.9X higher virtualized workload throughput.

Nokia and Intel are helping service providers realize their path to 5G with device, radio, access, core networking and management platforms that will transform their networks to enable new revenue opportunities.  At 5G World, we are demonstrating over the air interoperability for 5G use cases, and our Intel® 5G Mobile Trial Platform, that are sure to have us all looking forward to the future that 5G will bring.
