Meanwhile, with the Paris Agreement on climate change being ratified and taking effect in November 2016, the pressure has never been greater to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It’s not just governments feeling the heat, shareholders and consumers are increasingly concerned about the climate and want companies to up their game.
The most effective way to cut emissions is to cut the amount of energy used, which also brings a welcome cut in energy bills. We estimate that operators around the world are spending €66 billion a year on the energy used by their base station sites. At the same time, the move towards the 5G era will see multiple technologies added to the radio access network (RAN), pushing up energy consumption.
Yet there’s plenty of scope to cut energy use and save operators money. And the benefit is not just lower costs - operators that show they are green are more likely to get a thumbs up from consumers.
The journey to a zero emission RAN begins with a good strategy based on two parallel routes: use less power through increased energy efficiency and decarbonize the RAN through increased use of renewable energy.
Nokia is already helping operators take the lead with solutions such as the AirScale Base Station, which has up to 60% lower energy consumption than our previous generation radio access solution – and that means 60% less carbon emissions. There are many innovations in the design, such as software that reduces the energy consumption of the base stations and even zero energy use when there is no traffic.
