Leaders in sustainability come together

Twitter: @MinnaAila

It feels wonderful to be recognized as a great performer in sustainability. It feels even better when two such companies have joined forces. Nokia’s vision is to expand the human possibilities of technology. We have a great opportunity to positively impact the way people live and work each day – to make the world more productive, efficient, safe, healthy, smart and sustainable.

The combined strengths of Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent have not only created an innovation leader in the technologies that connect people and things, but also a company that is leading our industry in sustainability. Our position is confirmed by recent external rankings which recognize our sustainability performance, demonstrating our commitment to people and the planet. This makes me feel very proud, but also humble.

First, let me discuss the part that makes me very proud. Last week, Nokia was again named as one of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations by Corporate Knights, a media and investment advisory company. Corporate Knights examined approximately 4,000 mid and large cap stocks globally to gauge sustainability based on environmental and societal outcomes as well as financial performance.

In 2015, Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent were the only two companies in the technology hardware and equipment sector to be included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), with Alcatel-Lucent also named as one of only 24 Industry Group leaders. DJSI is a globally recognized independent benchmark that measures performance across material economic, environment and social criteria. In addition, Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent were the only companies in our sector that Robeco SAM, an investment specialist focused solely on sustainable investing, included in its Sustainability Yearbook 2016.  This distinction was based on 2014 sustainability performance and includes the top 15% of companies per industry.

The companies were also recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for their commitment to addressing climate change, each scoring a perfect 100 in the CDP Climate Change A-list.  Both were also among only 71 companies classified in the CDP Supplier Climate A-List. In addition, Nokia earned a perfect score of 100 in the CDP Nordic Disclosure Leadership Index for its climate transparency.

These results are a clear reflection of the importance we place on sustainability, and an indication of the impact that Nokia can have on the social, economic and environmental challenges facing the world. This takes me to the part that makes me very humble. Nokia is committed to contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The problems humankind is facing are becoming more and more complex – wicked, if you wish. It will take a lot of work and collaboration between many stakeholders to address these challenges. We are only at the beginning of what we can achieve.

The acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent greatly expands the ways we can help our customers, employees and the communities where we live and work.  We are committed to being the industry leader in sustainability with specific goals to:

  • Improve people’s lives with technology
  • Protect the environment
  • Respect people in everything we do
  • Make change happen together

Consistent with our vision, we will achieve our potential by staying grounded in meeting real human needs, applying technology for the service of people, and working to create a better world. Proud and humble. Cherishing recognition, but recognizing that in sustainability no company is ever “ready”.
