Powering education with broadband and Wi-Fi

We all take high speed internet connectivity, Wi-Fi, and access to multimedia for granted in the home. But what about in the educational environment at our local schools?

In the United States, for example, modern teaching models and the latest digital tools are already transforming primary and secondary education with collaborative learning, flipped classrooms  and instant access to the applications and information instructors need to keep students engaged. This is recognized by the US department of education, which projects that 2Gbps internet per 1000 students will be required by 2018.

But there’s a catch: about 63% of schools do not have the communications infrastructure and bandwidth to cope with digital education – let alone the expertise and budget to develop the required technical solutions.

Fixing the connectivity gap in schools

Here is where cable operators are stepping up to the challenge. It’s not just about providing speeds and feeds, but really understanding the available in-house resources and individual business environment at each educational institution.  In terms of services for digital education, cable operators offer a reliable, secure and high-performing network consisting of:

  • High- performance wide area networks (WANs) that connect schools within a district, and link to the Internet and other outside resources, including a wide portfolio of options based on industry standard Carrier Ethernet and Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based IP virtual private networks (VPNs)
  • Internal local area networks (LANs), including wireless communications that support a rising tide of mobile devices

Furthermore, balancing in-house resources with outsourced services from a cable provider means that schools can determine how best to stay abreast of technology advancements, new security threats and industry best practices. A good example is managed Wi-Fi service. As wireless needs grow, schools aren’t pressured to make additional capital investments or hire specialized technicians to handle the increased demands.

As an added plus, the US government’s E-rate program has been expanded to offer funding for broadband and Wi-Fi networks. For many institutions now is the time to digitally power the learning environment - and cable operators, like Cox Business, are ready to partner with them.
