ReefSharks spotted off the starboard side!

Apart from on TV, very few of us get the opportunity to see sharks in anything close to their natural habitat. Historically, this lead to at least some of the misconceptions about these fascinating creatures. Fortunately, we’re now beginning to better understand these denizens of the world’s oceans as they’re widely studied by scientists and marine biologists and ‘shark experts’. Their observations point to sharks’ intelligence that goes beyond what you might think. 

Just as observation has been key to our understanding of sharks’ intelligence, so experience in mobile networks has shown the need for increasing levels of network intelligence, especially in 5G networks. In the run up to Mobile World Congress this year, we saw the seasonal surfacing of new mobile networks products on their paths to commercial availability. As usual, we were very busy with our ever-expanding 5G portfolio. But it wasn’t only the end products that were capturing peoples’ attention, it was what we’re putting into them that drew the crowds.

I’m of course referring to ReefShark, a revolutionary chipset that features cutting edge silicon design and process technologies, which enable the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is important and something that’s mentioned more and more by the mobile industry. But in our case we’re actually implementing it; at every stage of our network products.

5G is about superlative performance, from high-capacity to low-latency and everything between. To achieve this, each network element and each component part, must operate at the highest possible level. AI in mobile networks will deliver a wealth of benefits for operators, from the real-time monitoring of radios and network optimization to the application of new techniques such as network slicing, to fulfil the service level demands of new business cases. Of course, such benefits ripple down to the end-user, whether business or subscriber, in a variety of forms from previously impossible remote process control to enhanced mobile broadband.

Since ReefShark first surfaced, it’s been seen by many of the world’s leading operators, all eager to better understand what the chipset can do for them and their 5G networks. We’re delighted to report we’re making good progress on our journey to integrating them into our products. In the same way there are different species of shark, so ReefShark chips also come in different types. Each chip is designed for a specific function, from increasing the intelligence and performance of massive MIMO antennas needed for 5G, through to boosting the compute power of the associated baseband modules. That approach ensures the very best performance at each stage of the network and network performance and manageability as a whole; just what your 5G network needs.
