Many would choose ultra-high speed and ultra-low latency as the things that will grab attention and SK Telekom of Korea certainly agrees. The company believes there is little point in 5G if it doesn’t offer users something substantially better than 4G.
This thinking is powering SK Telekom’s research and has led to it winning, with Nokia, the RANNY Award for driving the ‘Best 5G Initiative by Enabling the 5G User Experience’.
Presented at RAN World 2016 in Germany, the award showcases SK Telekom as the operator that has most successfully trialed innovative hardware or software to further 5G development.
With Nokia, SK Telecom has demonstrated 19.1 Gbps transmission speed over 400 MHz of bandwidth, the world’s best performance at that time, followed by 20.5 Gbps transmission speed over the air at Mobile World Congress 2016. We have also jointly demonstrated a 5G hybrid core network with separate user and control planes, essential to support ultra-low latency services.
Park Jin-hyo, SVP and Head of SK Telecom's Network R&D Center said, "We are honored to receive this prestigious award with Nokia. SK Telecom will make ceaseless efforts to enhance customer experience in the 5G era by developing cutting-edge technologies to meet 5G requirements, such as ultra-high speed, ultra-low latency, massive and seamless connectivity, and intelligent and reliable operation".
Further collaboration between SK Telecom and Nokia includes testing of Cloud RAN, the basis of Nokia AirScale Radio Access, which Nokia is using to power a live demonstration of 4.5G Pro at RAN World 2016.
We believe these achievements show that 5G is tangible and very close.
Together, SK Telekom and Nokia have showcased the potential of 5G to deliver extreme mobile broadband by transmitting massive amounts of data in the blink of an eye.
And users certainly will notice that.
