Troubleshooting just got easier with new 3G features

At the risk of sounding boring, yet ever so practical – because who has time for anything else – I want to tell you about some important 3G software updates that will help you tackle some of the practical, every day concerns like costly and time consuming drive tests and increasing energy costs.

Nokia’s recent WCDMA 16 software release offers some 20 new features to help you better supervise and manage radio frequency use, reduce base station energy consumption and improve monitoring and troubleshooting. Here are just 3 hands-on examples:

  • Having deployed a new base station site, you now need to optimize its performance by first measuring the levels of radio-frequency interference (RFI) and passive inter-modulation (PIM). But this usually means lengthy site visits with portable radio frequency analyzers. We figured there must be a better way, so we created a feature that turns your base station into a ‘sniffing probe’ that runs interference tests remotely. It even has a built-in analyzer so you don’t need to buy extra equipment. Say farewell to costly and time consuming drive tests!
  • Or suppose you want to change frequencies on multiple WCDMA cells as part of your refarming project. You have to first delete the cells and all their neighbors from your configuration plan, then recreate them in a new frequency plan. Now our ‘Modification of WCDMA Frequency’ feature makes cell frequency a parameter in the RNC, using only one configuration plan. You can change the frequency quickly and with minimal network disturbance.
  • Now consider base station RF sharing, which balances traffic across radio technologies to make the best use of your capacity. Radio modules must reserve resources just in case they are needed. This can prevent them switching off frequency layers to save energy when traffic demand is low during the night. But with our new ‘Energy Efficiency Shut Down Mode for RF Sharing’ feature, you can use energy-saving features for specific technologies (GSM, WCDMA or LTE) in parallel with RF sharing configurations, saving both energy and operational costs.
