Nokia publishes its supplier CSR implementation user guide

CSR

In this summer 2016, Nokia has decided to make its CSR implementation user guide accessible for all suppliers on its website.

Now available for download, the CSR implementation user guide is part of a process based on mutual benefits and cooperation with our stakeholders to reach a solid sustainable supply chain. The objective is to provide useful and helpful guidance to our suppliers to support them in their CSR improvement initiative further to a sustainability assessment. These assessments are performed by EcoVadis, who analyses suppliers’ sustainability management systems on behalf of Nokia.

First created based on years of experience in managing corrective action plans with our suppliers, this user guide has been used for two years by our Responsible Sourcing team as the essential resource of information and examples of the CSR best practices from the telecommunications and electronics sectors. We worked together with EcoVadis on building a content that could be an additional support to our recommendations during the improvement plan process with our suppliers.

This guide is designed to help suppliers building their own specific CSR management system following the PDCA approach integrated in the EcoVadis methodology: Plan – Do – Check – Act. This virtuous circle triggers continuous improvement and the user guide is the key tool to implement it efficiently. It is under the format of a PDF file with various links that help the user navigate from one datasheet to another. The introduction focuses on the different CSR domains covered by the guide, and then describes the management system approach recommended. Eventually come 21 improvement area datasheets divided by CSR categories (Environment – Labor & Human Rights – Ethics – Sustainable Procurement) and sub-categories (Policies – Actions – Results). This categorization follows the one applied by EcoVadis in its evaluation process. Each improvement area datasheet aims at:

  • Helping the company understand the benefits of such practices,
  • Giving an accurate and recognized definition of the concept,
  • Providing guidance on how to proceed, showing examples and explaining what is satisfactory or not,
  • Tailoring recommendations according to the company size, location and sector.

This CSR implementation user guide has already empowered many suppliers with the right tool to identify their objectives and stakes, implement satisfactory practices and eventually increase their overall CSR performance, revealed by audits and assessments.

The user guide has proved its efficiency over time as more and more suppliers have become satisfactory following an improvement plan over the last years. Now Nokia unveils it and makes it available for any of its suppliers, but also anyone interested in upgrading its CSR management system.
