    ]]>    Nokia today announced the successful upgrade of RailTel’s DWDM National Long-Distance (NLD) network, undertaken in collaboration with its authorized partners. Nokia has deployed RailTel’s Carrier-Grade NAT (CG-NAT) and metro optical transport network across India. These initiatives collectively address the growing demand for high-speed, resilient connectivity, driving operational efficiency and reducing costs.

    Leveraging Nokia’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and advanced transponder technology, the enhanced network achieves a substantial increase in transport capacity while minimizing cost per bit. By reutilizing RailTel’s existing infrastructure and previously unused channel spectrum. The deployment also introduces high-capacity Lambda transmission and express traffic lanes between cities, significantly improving overall network performance.

    Nokia’s 7750 Service Router (SR), integrated with Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) and CG-NAT functionality—empowers RailTel’s network to efficiently support enterprise-grade high-speed traffic alongside internal ISP services.     ]]>    Nokia today announced that it has collaborated with ST Engineering and First One Systems to deploy an IP/MPLS-based mission-critical Backbone Transmission Network (BTN) for the new Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Orange Line of Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM). The project is expected to be completed by 2030.  

    When deployed, Nokia’s IP/MPLS solution will enable BEM to have a high-capacity, low-latency, reliable and secure transmission backbone to support both vital and non-vital railway applications, including CCTV surveillance, public announcements, passenger information displays, radio communication, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), among others.

    The new 35.9 km Orange Line will connect the east and west sides of Bangkok, featuring both underground and elevated transit systems. Railway systems worldwide are undergoing digital transformation to enhance operational efficiency, reliability, and safety.  

    As part of the project, Nokia will develop two BTNs, 10G and 40G, each to support network speeds for voice, data and video transmission between stations and Operations Control Center (OCC). Nokia’s solution includes Nokia 7250 Interconnect Router, Nokia 7210 Service Access System, Nokia Network Services Platform and professional services. The solution will help BEM to simplify operations and maintenance while providing real-time visibility into network performance.

    ]]>    Nokia, working in partnership with Hitachi Rail, announced that LTA will deploy its IP/MPLS and fiber Optical LAN solutions as part of an expansive video surveillance upgrade to its critical railway infrastructure. The Nokia solutions will enable LTA to significantly enhance its CCTV network used across Singapore’s heavily utilized railway system serving millions of passengers per day.  

    The CCTV cameras play a critical role within the LTA railway system, providing real-time monitoring and video surveillance services that ensure public safety, help spot illegal activities, and manage traffic patterns. With CCTV cameras placed across more than 50 stations, LTA needed a network infrastructure that could meet its growing capacity demands. 

    To support its expanding network cameras and growing bandwidth requirements, LTA deployed Nokia’s fiber Optical LAN including hardened ONUs and future-proof OLTs capable of supporting 25Gb/s speeds. Designed as a future-ready solution, Optical LAN requires up to 70% less cabling and 40% less power compared to traditional copper-based LAN networks. Nokia’s IP/MPLS deployment also enables LTA to more effectively backhaul the network data traveling to its Operations Control Center where live video streams are viewed and stored.

This industry breakthrough positions DB to leverage a modern mobile network on a frequency band dedicated to 5G railway communications in Europe. It also serves as a basis for the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), supporting resilient, efficient and more sustainable rail operations through greater digitalization, capacity and service reliability.

    This deployment marks a significant step in the railway industry's transition from the legacy Global System for Mobile Communications for Railway (GSM-R) to the 5G-based FRMCS standard designed for real-time, mission-critical communications between infrastructure and trains. Built to support full railway automation, FRMCS integrates advanced technologies like AI and underpins a more competitive, capable and future-ready industry.

    The technology is being implemented at DB’s digital railway test field in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge, Germany), running on live trains. Key features include built-in failover, self-healing capabilities and real-time monitoring to ensure high availability and efficiency. The solution will also be used for the European FP2-MORANE-2 project, which evolves from earlier FRMCS initiatives to advance the digitalization of rail across Europe.

    ]]>    Nokia today announced that it is working with ProRail, the organization responsible for the Netherlands' national railway network infrastructure, to deploy a cloud-native Global System for Mobile Communications for Railway (GSM-R) core network — a global first for the rail industry. By migrating its GSM-R core network, ProRail will enhance safety and services reliability for millions of passengers while paving the way for Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) networks. 

    The upgrade is part of a four-year modernization project that will extend the life of ProRail’s existing 2G infrastructure, offering valuable insights into cloud-native technology. It enables ProRail to improve its railway services, decrease downtime, integrate new technologies as they emerge, reduce long-term total ownership costs, make seamless decisions, and improve operational efficiency through real-time data exchange. 

    As part of this life cycle management project, Nokia will supply, install and maintain its Nokia Cloud Platform, a fully cloud-native core infrastructure that includes the Nokia Assurance Center, Packet Core (Cloud Mobility Manager, Cloud Mobility Gateway), Registers, Intelligent Network, and Data Center Fabric. The project will also include upgrades for MantaRay NM, Nokia single network management system for all radio and mobile core technologies, Archive Cloud for automated network element backup and restore, and Nokia Network Services Platform for automating IP, optical and microwave networks, making ProRail’s railway communications more agile and efficient.

    Nokia and ProRail's deployment shows how European rail operators can build a foundation for future-ready communications as part of the ongoing industry’s digital transformation.
