My life at Nokia: José de Francisco

José de Francisco

Moving into the future of connectivity

My career in the telecommunications industry started when I was an intern at the Microelectronics Group at Lucent Technologies in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, in the late nineties. I rejoined the company after completing my MBA at DePaul University in Chicago.

I had the privilege of learning from some of the best in the tech industry.

I was involved in research, strategy, product management and marketing initiatives at different stages and across many divisions of our global business.

In January this year, Alcatel-Lucent became part of the Nokia family and its legendary culture of innovation. Alcatel-Lucent itself is the result of a merger between Alcatel and Lucent in 2006. Alcatel’s and Lucent’s technical ingenuity and heritage can even be traced back to the second half of the 19th century.

It pays to understand our shared history as it helps to envision the future we’ll create together.

Our ultimate goal is to pioneer and enable communication experiences that foster quality of life by keeping people connected in an increasingly fragmented world. At the heart of our innovations lies our scientific curiosity and entrepreneurial spirit.

At the new Nokia, our know-how and technical prowess focuses on the design, delivery and support of the underlying communications systems and the magic that we all experience when things just work. We take pride in human factors being our guiding principles in everything we do – our motto is #MakeTechHuman.

I have been amazed at how things have been coming together since day one.

I am writing this just a couple of months since the formation of the new Nokia. I couldn’t stop smiling when I received my new badge which features the very same picture that was taken of me when I joined Lucent. Interestingly enough, I experienced the same level of excitement despite of many years having passed since then.

A month later, I was at Mobile World Congress where we showcased our combined portfolio of solutions. We came together as a team with a common mission of improving connectivity around the world. It created a kind of momentum that will propel us into the future at full speed.

This is the beginning of something big. For us, for Nokia and the entire industry.
