Architectural considerations for optical computing and photonic switching

This tutorial paper describes the motivations for using free- space digital optics as a packaging and interconnection technology for high-speed digital integrated circuits within both computing and switching architectures. It also describes the fundamental hardware components used within this emerging technology, and outlines the benefits and limitations of the various technology sub-systems. Example prototype systems are described, and a discussion of future applications is also included.
