1. Today's Loop Architecture: Before the introduction of the Digital Loop Carrier Systems, customers were served on copper loops from the central office. The planning and engineering of these loops had to provide for construction of new homes and offices as well as for growth in the number of lines required by each end user. Because the forecasting of specific growth was uncertain, serving areas were planned with the "ultimate" number of copper pairs terminated to each living unit or business.
