The effects of ionizing radiation from the terrestrial environment on the transmission properties of optical fibers and the potential radiation-induced losses on spans employing those fibers are topics of considerable interest to manufacturers and users of fibers for communications systems. This study provides environmental radiation dose rate estimates for both outdoor terrestrial and indoor environments.
