01 January 1988
Today's telephone network in the USA is already evolving toward broadband capability. For the past dozen years fiber optic technology has steadily replaced metallic transmission systems of both the analog and digital form. This evolution began in the long distance networks has gradually migrated into the exchange and loop (local distribution) networks. Fiber optic technology is now routinely placed in the business community, allowing broadband access for these customers. Within the USA we observe rapid growth of 1.5 Mb/s digital services, and project substantial demands for even higher rate services.
