Back-Action Evading Measurements Using Parametric Downconversion.

A simple experimental arrangement demonstrates back-action evasion of noise in a quantum measurement of an optical field. Correlation between the photocurrents from a measured signal beam and a measurement readout beam is 0.6 dB below the shot- noise limit. The measurement is accomplished by using a single- pass parametric downconversion process.
