The transient intensity of resonant secondary emission from GaAs quantum wells is coherently controlled by means of excitation with two phase-locked pulses. Even after the complete decay of the optical coherence (resonant Rayleigh scattering) the incoherent luminescence shows quantum beats from excitons in different islands with different monolayer splittings.
