This paper will review the basic flow of technology to Japan which has resulted in the production of modern products in Computers and Communications areas. It will then review the contemporary research programs of the Japanese and investigate their impact on modern technologies as seen by engineers engaged in R&D in the United States. Examples are given in selected areas of the program results. The flow of technology from Japan to the U.S. is then assessed and show to be rapidly increasing. Finally, suggestions are made to foster the maximum mutual benefits from the technology exchange.
