Considerations on transport latency in passive optical networks

Deterministic, ultra-low latency and low jitter communication is becoming an important requirement on future access networks. PONs are known to be a resource efficient and low cost technology for optical access. Their operation, however, needs rethinking to comply with future time-sensitive network applications.
