Direct correlations are shown to exist between measurements of ionicity and SEXAFS-derived surface coordination numbers and bond lengths. The overall magnitude of the bond length trends are only several tenths of an angstrom, requiring the data to be very accurate. That simple concepts with no adjustable parameters are used in the comparisons allows deviations from the trends to provide additional information about the nature of the surface bonding.
