With the discovery of new high T sub c superconducting cuprates, of other new superconducting oxides including Ba sub 0.6 K sub 0.4 BiO sub 3 with a T sub c near 30K, and of processing techniques such as the melt textured growth of Ba sub 2 YCu sub 3 O sub 7, the importance of crystals to scientific and technological progress is apparent. The growth of Ba sub 2 YCu sub 3 O sub 7 for CuO-rich melts gives crystals with surface areas approaching 1 cm sup 2, important to many fundamental studies of high temperature super- conductivity.
