Demonstration of Nonlinear Inverse Synthesis Based 16 QAM OFDM Transmission
22 July 2016
This is an extension of my previous work at Aston university. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a nonlinear inverse synthesis (NIS) based transmission with 16 QAM OFDM format in an optical link with EDFA-only amplification. We show, for the first time, that the noise in NIS-based transmission, including residual nonlinear impairments, nonlinear signal × noise interaction and ASE noise, can be approximated as Gaussian. Using the Gaussian assumption, we calculate the achievable information rate (AIR) of the investigated NIS-based transmission with hard decision (HD) and soft decision (SD) feed-forward error corrections (FEC), showing that 3 bits/symbol can be achieved over a distance of 1632 km.
