An expert system is based on a set of rules that encode the detailed knowledge needed to solve a set of problems. A typical expert system is able to explain its behavior and conclusions in terms of these rules. If the rules of an expert system are placed within objects, the explanations of the system are affected. This paper describes the use of a rule entry mechanism and an associated explanation facility, Describe. Describe displays the structure, behavior, and conclusions of object- based expert systems executing in the Zetalisp environment.
