Design and Measurement Techniques for 80 and 110Gb/s 1-tap Decision Feedback Equalizers

Amillimeter wave frequencymixed-signal design of adaptive 1-tap half-rate look-ahead decision feedback equalizers for 80 and 110Gb/s short-reach optical communication systems is presented. Tests are developed to determine the maximum operating bit rate of the equalizers. Results are also presented for intersymbol interference mitigation at 80Gb/s for 20GHz bandwidth-limited channel and for dispersion-limited fiber optic channel. The two equalizers are designed in a 0.13 ìm SiGe:C BiCMOS technology. The 80 and 100Gb/s versions dissipate 4 and 5.75W, respectively and occupy 2 and 2.56mm^2, respectively.
