We will present an overview of the design concepts and methodologies for performance evaluation in the realization of integrated networks for packetized voice and data Congestion control using variable rate voice coding and bit dropping will be discussed. Characteristics of packetized voice traffic and the advantages of the bit dropping scheme for smoothing the packetized voice traffic will be described. We will also look at the results of subjective studies on voice quality with respect to the voice coding schemes and bit dropping. Methodologies for efficient allocations of bandwidth in the network between voice and data traffic will also be covered.
