This chapter presents two design examples for the purpose of putting together design concepts. It provides the high‐level design targets and boundary conditions assumed for both design examples. In the first example the operator has his own transport network, and microwave transport is deployed for the first few miles. The pre‐aggregation and aggregation networks are in this example assumed to be based on L3VPN over IP/MPLS. The pre‐aggregation ring nodes function as provider edge (PE) routers having two VRFs. The second example is similar to the first one, except that now the access transport between the cell site and the operator regional data center is based on leased line. The design targets require that the base stations are phase synchronized. Both providers offer point‐to‐point connection from base station site to the operator core site. The required quality of service (QoS) can be satisfied with either provider.
