Design of the S system for data analysis.

S is a language and system for interactive data analysis developed at Bell Laboratories and currently in use on the UNIX(*) operating system. It emphases interactive analysis and graphics, ease of use, flexibility and extensibility. This memorandum describes the design philosophy of S and addresses a number of implementation issues--it is intended for an audience interested in computing, and is not oriented toward the use of S.
