Design Strategies for a Customizable UNIX System (NOT PUBLISHED)

Now that the UNIX* operating system is a mature product, and is often distributed in binary form, user customization of the system is more difficult. Users must contend not only with their inability to make some desired changes, but also with the need to carry forward such changes when new releases of the UNIX system are distributed by the vendor.
