Designing an ATM switch for extreme reliability

Lucent Technologies PacketStar ATM Core Switch is designed to deliver the high reliability required in public telecommunications networks. It achieves this reliability through use of a variety of strategies including duplication of hardware and software components, isolation of groups of components to minimize the effect of problems, fault recovery hierarchies, and others. As a result, cell loss is very minimal during problems, and permanent virtual circuits are unaffected even if the main switch control system goes down. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
