Deterministic Dynamic Optical Network: The enabler of Tactile Internet

The ultimate purpose of Tactile Internet is to free human beings from the burden of repetitive automatic daily tasks, so they can focus on the goal of their actions rather than how their actions are actually performed. Tactile Internet will rely on Edge Cloud, a network architecture based on distributed Data Centers hosting computing capabilities to provide faster, easier and cost-effective data processing. Tactile Internet needs to rely on a deterministic low latency, highly reactive, and trustable network, as opposed to today's Best Effort Internet. In this paper, we show how Deterministic Dynamic Optical Network, which relies on two networks proposed by Bell Labs (Optical Ethernet and Cloud Burst Optical Slot Switch-ing) will enable Tactile Internet.
