This is the first of a series of technical memoranda describing the development of new, Z-direction anisotropically conductive composites based on magnetic alignment of conductive particles in nonconductive matrix materials such as elastomers or adhesives. The composites contain many vertically aligned chains of conductive spheres, the ends of which protrude from the surfaces for better electrical contact. Such composite structures exhibit anisotropic electrical conduction as well as unique thermal, optical, mechanical and magnetic properties. This combination of characteristics gives the composite many advantages over interconnection materials.
